I am seeking a solution for converting variable frame rate MOVs from an iphone to constant FR for my video editing program. All of the search results are fairly old or don't appear to specifically address what I'm after.

I have used Handbrake, but that appears to do a encode to MP4.

I have used VDub to produce a LAGS CFR AVI which works OK, but the files are fairly large (1.6gb per minute for HD).

A suggestion to use TSMuxer (to avoid an encode) didn't work because it crashed when I tried to add the file.

I would be grateful if someone could point me to a smart-render/quick stream copy method for these videos to get them into CFR.

    I've attached a sample MOV.

This was mentioned in another thread already recently, but IT IS NOT POSSIBLE to go from VFR to CFR without re-encoding. NOT POSSIBLE.

If you're going to be re-encoding, use the best methods and get it into the file format you're going to want it to end up in (likely h264/h265 in MP4/MKV).
<edit: you said you wanted to edit, so going to a digital intermediate is better for you in the short run - LAGS, HUFFYUV, ProRes, Cineform, DNXHD, etc - but because of their bitrate due to less loss, they WILL be much larger. Nature of the beast.>

At Johns0 further suggestion, I tried MKVToolnix, and it changes the FR to constant in a couple of seconds (10min, 580mb MOV), according to Mediainfo (output is MKV). The audio stays synced in VDub but unfortunately my Movie Edit Pro loses sync (5 frames after 10 minutes) so I may have to stick with LAGS.

Could the Mediainfo report of Constant FR for the MKV file be wrong?

You can cheat a player, but you can't cheat an editor.
