How do I find out what codec a certain program requires? How do I find out what's 'missing'?

This post (or eventual thread) concerns the free software Sqirlz Water Reflection 2.6. It's a little program that adds water reflection or ripple animations to images or videos. I can get images to work, but not videos -- a codec likely is missing. I don't know if this fits in any subforum. But I believe the problem has something to do with codecs.

I've already installed the K-Lite Mega pack (maybe I didn't install it correctly?)

I've tried using Avidemux to convert an MP4 or MKV to AVI offline. But also tried using an online converter. I did manage to import the AVI file into Sqirlz, but it leaves a solid black screen. No hint of the video footage whatsoever.

I've already email the developer but appears there's no longer support. I received a yahoo mail delivery failure. Yes, the address is correct.

I'm basically trying to create a live desktop wallpaper. Using OBS to capture video footage and using Wallpaper Engine ($3.99 on steam, my only ever steam purchase) to do the rest.

From the help system for the software:

"Sqirlz Water Reflections is currently limited to opening 24-bit and 16(15)-bit AVI files, and has been tested with a number of popular video CODECs (for example, Cinepak, Microsoft Video 1, Intel YUV, Intel Indeo R3.2, and of course, no compression)."

These are legacy codecs and may not be available in codec packs - I would NEVER install a codec pack. But you can always prepare an un-compressed avi which does not need any codec.
