I respect the moderator's decision but that tool is also available for download on Videohelp! There is iprocisia in this choice.

As with any forum, you agreed to follow the rules whether you read them or not.

While it's your right to question them, the rule to disallow any discussion about downloading from subscription sites is there to protect the forum from possible DCMA takedown and to protect the forum members that do follow the rules from potentially being tagged as pirates. There are other forums and sites that do allow discussion of your topic, none of which are allowed to be disclosed here.

If by hypocrisy you're going to use the often cited "But you allow discussion of ripping DVD and Blu-Ray discs!", that, in most countries falls under fair use. In the case of Netflix, your attempting to download the content goes again the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up:

"4.6. You agree to use the Netflix service, including all features and functionalities associated therewith, in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations, or other restrictions on use of the service or content therein. Except as explicitly authorized in these Terms of Use, you agree not to archive, download, reproduce, distribute, modify, display, perform, publish, license, create derivative works from, offer for sale, or use content and information contained on or obtained from or through the Netflix service."

Separate and apart from any use of this program, its availability will cause shudders throughout the widevine universe. The resulting drama from the response of the respective players is likely to be far more interesting than any of the programs that this tool can download.

I firmly believe in the forum rules here. But with regards to someone that subscribes to Netflix (I do not) and owns the right to watch their streaming service, wouldn't this fall under the "time shifting" rule that was decided a long time ago with the Sony Betamax VCR case? Again, I'm not arguing about the rules here. I am not even close to being a lawyer in my dreams but it seems to me that a similar type of precedent has already been made when it comes to recording a show that you have a legal right to. Just a thought.

No. The time-shifting rule only applies if the content to be recorded is available at a fixed time. If the content is available on demand then the ability to view at a time chosen by the viewer is built into the service,

The hypocrisy obviously arises from the fact that this forum lists this tool in the tool section but does not allow any discussion related to it. Can you think of any other tool listed on this site that we can not discuss? Vdub? x264? TMPG? Anything?

If the use of this software violates this forum's rules then it should be removed from the tools section, including it there is a tacit endorsement of this tool.

Yes, there is at least one other tool, PlayOn, which can't be discussed for recording Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Presumably, these tools are listed because they have legitimate uses as well as illicit uses. They can also be used for downloading/recording from other sources which are not paid services.

Not listing the software is like not selling hammers at a hardware store because they can be used to break into cars. If the OP asked to discuss using it for a non-subscription site, it would have been okay, but the subject line explicitly says "A tool to download from Netflix/Amazon".

If I walked into a hardware store and asked which hammer would be best to break into cars, they would be within their rights not to sell me any hammer and possibly ban or have me escorted out of the store.

Didn't RedFox (in an earlier incarnation) have issues with their ripping tools ? So they do appear to fly close to the sun and could well get burnt yet again.


A 'throw away' paragraph about self-usage and respect for copyright will hardly impress the courts.

They knew about it long before this thread. Probably when the reddit post announcing its release had a couple of hundred comments within a few hours, which also bounced all over twitter and other social media.

If AnysSream is restricted to downloading from only two services then it sure doesn't live up to its name. So if AnyStream can only be used for what are illicit purposes under VideoHelp's rules then perhaps it is only in the VideoHelp's software section because of this site's long history with AnyDVD and related products.

Well we do appear to have more discussion than the rules appear to allow.


I do not sub to either NF or AP (although during one purchase I did acquire it un-wittingly and paid for 6 months without using it). But a cursory look at the quoted forum might well reveal that atleast NF are a step ahead.

That is just its current ability. On the redfox forums there is a list of requested sites to be added. At least one isn't a subscription site.
