  1. I'm posting in the Newbies forum.... after some long time away from the forum ... because I am still very much a newbie.

Here's my problem. I have a set of 3 episodes of a BBC TV documentary (which is no longer on i-Player). I recorded them some time ago, and I now cannot remember what software I used. I have them saved as mp4 files. Each lasts about an hour. They play perfectly well in VLC on computer. I used AVStoDVD to create an ISO of all three episodes, and burned them to a single DVD.

Just recently I played the DVD. The first two episodes played OK. The third one started fine.... and the video is good all through ....but the audio goes progressively out of sync. By the end of the hour it is so far out as to be unrecognisable. I don't know whether plus or minus, but the difference is big - trying 'j' and'k' on VLC doesn't bring it into sync.

I had saved the ISO file, so I checked that by playing it using VLC. And the ISO shows the same problem.

So the sync problem has somehow happened during the processing of the mp4 file(s) by AVStoDVD to create the ISO. The odd thing is that it only affected the third of the three mp4 files; and it is not a constant sync-delay (which I think I know how to fix by re-doing the conversion and using the AviSynth tab?). But for this progressive and eventually massive loss of sync, how do I put it right?

If more specific technical details of the video and sound tracks of the mp4 file are needed, I can get them from the AVStoDVD project file. [EDIT and update... now added in as below]. I'd need more guidance if asked to provide log files or other such info.

The details of the MP4 file of the episode which goes out of sync are shown as follows in the AVStoDVD screen:

    video: AVC - 1604kbps - 1280x720 - DAR16:9 - 50fps(CFR) - Progressive - 59:05minutes - 177236frames
    audio: AAC LC - 132kbps - CBR -2ch - 44100Hz - 59:04minutes - (0ms delay) - UN - Internal

  2. Extract the third episode from your DVD with vob2mpg to a new mpg file.
Try to play this new mpg file with vlc. If plays fine, then you have to re-author the whole DVD.
If the synch problem is also present in the mpg file, post a mediainfo report of this new mpg here.

  3. Thanks, ProWo.... those two software programs are new to me. But I have followed your advice.

The sync problem is there in the extracted mpg file. Here is the mediainfo:

I don't really understand any of this stuff! I hope you do, and can spot the problem. More important, I'd really appreciate advice on how to fix it...

Is the "frame rate" an issue? The video and audio details show a difference.

If it helps, I have Avidemux and Handbrake already installed on my computer, as well as AVStoDVD - but I don't claim to be expert with any of them: I usually just rely on their default settings. Happy to take your advice.

  4. You say that the third MP4 file plays fine, but the portion of the DVD authored from that file has an audio sync problem. One possibility is that the other two MP4s are 24 fps, and the third one is 25 fps (or the other way around). Use Mediainfo to look at each of the MP4 files, one at a time, and write down the FPS for each one.

If you still want/need a DVD of the episodes, probably the easiest thing to do would be to re-author the three MP4s to a new DVD. If you are worried about having the problem appear again, you could burn the result to a DVD re-writeable. I always do this to check my work, so I don't waste a lot of media, especially now that my supply of quality media is limited to what I have on my shelf.

  5. Audio and video track are of equal length. I think they are muxed wrong. Load the ifo file of the third episode in pgcdemux and save video and audio track separately. Then re-mux them with imagompeg muxer.
    Quote Quote
  6. Well, ProWo.... I had high hopes.

I did exactly as you suggested. Used pgcdemux and saved separate video and audio files. Then used imagompeg muxer to create a new mpeg file. Then I played it using vlc, to check it.

The sync problem remains. At the start of the mpg, the video and audio are in sync. By about 40 minutes in, the audio is a long way ahead (I'd reckon maybe 5-6 seconds) of the video image.

So - whatever the problem is, that hasn't solved it! Any more alternatives to try?

Incidentally - thanks, johnmeyer, for your response. I haven't yet tried re-recording all three MP4s. But I already know that the first two convert and record perfectly happily on to DVD. The third episode plays in perfect sync as an MP4 when played via VLC. But when converted (by AVStoDVD) for creating a DVD ISO image - or now when the tracks are split and re-muxed as ProWo suggested - the sync problem arises. I'm not wasting DVDs, because I normally create an ISO first, and check that with VLC before burning to a disk. And - as mentioned, when I check the ISO, the sync problem shows up (so I don't burn it to disk....).

Do you have the Avstodvd log from the project? If not create a new project with just this mp4. Run it and post the log to this thread

  8. Hello davexnet

I have this AVStoDVD log file from a few days ago. This was an attempt to create a new ISO when I found that the DVD I had made a year or so ago had the sync problem.

This attempt included all three episodes of the TV programme, not just the problematic one (which is Episode 3). I checked the ISO before burning another disk - and found that it, too, still had the sync problem. Here are the details - I hope you can interpret them:

Probably best to upgrade AVStpDVD to the latest 2.89 alpha; it's stable and has many fixes and improvements.
Or, if you want to put that off for now, go into preferences Avisynth tab and set FFMpegSource for video and audio
    source filters. Save as default.
Now add just the problem mp4 and try it by itself.

Lots of info for my tired eyes but am I seeing right that the Title 3 audio is 59:04 and the video is 59:05 ? I don't do much processing anymore but when I had the gradual sync drift you describe it's been due to uneven lengths.

There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  11. Thanks gll99... I had noticed that. A one-second difference. Would that result in the audio sync being adrift by 5-6 seconds (or more - I can't actually measure it) by the end of a 59-minute programme?

And if that disparity is the cause of the problem, how do I "stretch" the audio track to match the video at 59:05?

There are other differences too. For example, the first two titles/episodes have audio tracks which are "AAC LC" (whatever that is!) while title 3 audio is "MPEG-1 Audio layer 2".

I did exactly as you suggested. Used pgcdemux and saved separate video and audio files.
What is the duration of the audio files extracted? Control that with mediainfo and post it here.

You can check that LAV filters are actually being used.
Load the mp4 into AVStoDVD. At the top select codec/build directshow filters graph
I've seen situations where having mp2 in MKV/mp4 causes problems.
Still best, for this file, to use FFmpegsource as I mentioned earlier

  14. Well, thanks very much to everyone who has chipped in with suggestions. I think I have solved the problem, even if I don't quite understand the diagnosis of what was wrong.

I took davexnet's advice, and re-set the Avisynth settings in AVStoDVD from whatever the default was (I think it was A2Dsource?) so that both video and audio source filters were FFmpegsource instead.

I then made an ISO of just the problematic Episode 3, as a test run. When I checked the ISO using VLC, it played perfectly - no sync problem at all.

So, I then used AVStoDVD to create an ISO image containing all three episodes (as with the very first - problematic - DVD). I left the source filter settings on FFmpegsource. Created the ISO image, and checked it using VLC. It, too, played perfectly. No sync problem.

I have just burned that ISO to a disk. It, too, plays well all the way through. So - whatever the cause of the loss of sync, re-setting the AVStoDVD Avisynth settings seems to have done the trick.

It still mostly seems like witchcraft to me, but I am pleased that I have a DVD which has all the programme episodes complete and playing properly. Let's hope future projects are trouble-free....

Glad to hear it worked. If you've the inclination, also upgrade to the latest version, as I mentioned earlier -
many improvements, fixes and a lot of hard work went into it.

Directshowsource is known to have problems, it's not frame accurate amongst other things.
Another thing handled better in the new version
