The hack worked beautifully. I have just completed the 3 hour recording without any interruptions like before.

I also presume as it is now set to Region FREE if I was given a DVD from another region it might play that as well. Very unlikely because they aren't available in the UK, or if they are no one would want them.

Anyway. I'm delighted with the hack and it means I can keep this machine rather than throw it out.

Well people in the UK do buy Region1 dvds. On my infrequent visits to London I would always visit a store in IIRC St. Martin's Lane that actually specialised in selling these. Plus other rare material from Europe. Sadly it closed down appr. 3 years ago but there is a mail-order outlet not connected to this store that still sells Region1's

Yes it's great. I now have an MP4 file of that video. It was important because it was filmed on a camcorder in 1988-1992 of kids birthday parties. Those children now have children of their own...

I wasn't that worried about playing DVDs from other regions, but that is an unexpected bonus.

Just to test that out I found a region 1 DVD of the movie "Lincoln" on eBay for 1.75 including postage. He must be pleased to sell it because the postage cost is more than half that!

2. Buyer did not appreciate the simple fact that a Region1 disk will not play on a Region2 machine. Go back to thought 1.


I play my all my dvds (and BD's for that matter) on the PC with software to defeat Region Codes etc. I only have Region2 dvd playback from standalone units and would infact shy from even attempting what you did given that reading many a post a hack often leads to a dead machine simply since a hack is done on a machine that has a different firmware to one that the advertised hack has previously worked. Were you lucky ? Maybe. But you had the added advantage of people active here who had the previous experience in this particular unit.

You made some very good points and perhaps I now have an opportunity to buy some very cheap DVDs that no one else wants.

On your other point, I fully appreciated and accepted the risk that the hack might not work and I was willing to try it. After all, it's a machine that is 15 years old and had served me well over the years, so had it not gone so smoothly it wouldn't have disappointed me. Having said that, the success is due to our friend CrazyCanuck.

DB83, don't forget the increased use of blurays over DVDs these days. Then there's the lower resolution of video on region 1 discs compared with region 2 ones. And, IIRC, there were advantages to getting region 6(?) (Australia & New Zealand?) discs as I *think* they were PAL but often had the US extras?

Anyway, Dbr97, congratulations on getting it working again. I'm quite keen on digging out my LVW-5006s and having a bit of a play . . . so thanks for that!

Thanks, but I couldn't have achieved it alone. Our friend CrazyCanuck shared his knowledge

One tip I did discover was that any option to recover the system back to the default values and when installing the hack, when it restarted the display setting was wrong and it wouldn't show anything on my TV. Remembering the top option on the setup page was for the video output I moved the cursor over to the right twice, then selected Component and pressed enter, then it displayed ok. It then asked if I wanted to save and I said yes. Without that, the screen was rolling and flashing different colours.

The seller was a ah since he still claimed his Region1 item was uncut except I have NEVER seen an uncut dvd of this film ANYWHERE >> I have seen it uncut but that was a German tv transmission. But that is Region1 so if I can find it (I have still have it) I can send it to you at no cost. Just PM me if interested.

Thanks for the kind offer, but I have just bought another Region 1 DVD for 2.50 so that is worth it for the test.

This one is a collection of 8 war movies, so 0.31 each and that includes the postage

The second DVD that I ordered on eBay arrived and it was described as Region 1, but it does play on my DVD player. Either that, or my DVD player will play DVDs from any region, but I doubt that. It's a Toshiba SD-220E


After testing I'll return the DVD to you

Region 1 DVD received and now I can confirm my Liteon not only does what I wanted in terms of recording with the hack applied, it is now also able to play DVDs from Region 1 and possibly other regions as well, so now I can take advantage of DVDs offered cheaply

Thank you for keeping me in mind regarding firmware 204. I tried to run it, but unfortunately it failed. It didn't provide any useful messages though, so I'm not sure what to do about it It's still on 0197.

Hi dbr97, it did recognize it as a firmware upgrade file which is good, I've seen that before where I had to either retry (2, 3 times) the update with the same disc or burn a new disc. Could be as simple as didn't properly copied a particular file while burning, a bad read while updating or a bad file. If it doesn't work out (bad file), at least you're still on hacked 0197.

I created another CD, but when I turned it on it just displays this and nothing else works when I press buttons on the remote

Unplug, press and hold eject buton and plug back in while holding eject button, that should open the tray.

Actually the CD tray does open, but nothing else works and nothing is displayed on the TV. Maybe I shouldn't have turned it off earlier. Is it possible the firmware settings have been cleared?

I think we have a more fundamental problem now. I unplugged and left it for a while, then plugged back in and all I see on the LED display is the usual "Hello" and then "Put in CD". Nothing else happens and nothing displayed on the TV. I put in the 0197 CD as well, but no response.

No. The only button that does anything is the on/off button. The tray opens when I turn it on and I have to close it manually, then it won't open using the eject button.

Has the operating system been wiped? Maybe that's what the Insert CD message means... ie: put in a startup CD

There's no start-up CD per se, the firmware files are such. Try leaving the CD in, unplug and replug. Thinking it might read the CD when it tries to boot up once plugged back in with cd inside.

Sadly no difference. I unplugged and waited a minute, then plugged back in with the CD in there. After the "Hello", the CD tray opens and the same message "Put in CD"

Yes I think it is spinning and then it ejects the CD. Maybe it doesn't contain what its expecting?
The same happens when I press the button on the unit.

It usually starts and displays the usual blue Liteon message on the TV, but nothing is displayed at all.
