I have used the following downloaders in Chrome for years and they worked pretty well for almost any video on almost any site except YouTube. Occasionally they would stop working on a site that previously worked. If you contacted the people that created it they would update it and it would work again. This was for any kind of site from music, daily motion, tutorials and porn. In the last 6 months or longer, a lot of these downloaders have been working for less and less sites and the creators are not responding to messages at all. The downloaders I am talking about are: Flash Video Downloader + ; Flash Video Downloader ; Stream Video Downloader ; Video Downloader for Chrome ; Video Downloader PLUS and Video Downloader professional. Flash Video Downloader + just started switching Google searches to Bing everytime you search when it is opened which is very annoying. I think some of these are vulnerable to being hacked to do other things. But some of them were dependable for years until now. I'm using Chrome and Windows 7.
Is there any reliable donwloader free or paid for Chrome or another browser that will work for any kind of video on pretty much every site? And does it have people that created it that support it and will update it to make it work on any site if it stops working???
Thanks!
DL

Maybe it's Chrome. Try FF with Video Download Helper, works for me on You Tube without issue. Plus you can d/l more than one after another, Chrome restricts the time until you can grab another.

COmmon request but wishful thinking. Streaming sites do NOT like users downloading their content so they're always changng protocols. I doubt any single streaming downloader will ever be able to keep up with it all. Install several.

Thanks to everybody that replied! I have been using multiple downloaders so that when one doesn't work I have others to try. The problem of course, is that more and more often now, none of them will work on a specific site. Or some sites they normally do not work on, depending on the video, some will work. It would appear that these sites have videos they consider somewhat premium and others that are not. They sometimes don't care about the ones that are not.
To me streaming is similar to a live broadcast in that you don't have the entire file available to you all at once and therefore cannot download it other than at the speed at which they are streaming it to your system. Are you just calling any video online streaming? Because most every one that I download is done as a complete file in a short time.
Some of the creators of the downloaders I have used, were pretty good at updating them when you let them know it would not work on a particular video on a site. They would have you send them the url and in a few days they would have fixed their downloader and it would work. But they seemed to have dropped off the face of the Earth. They do not respond any more. Of course these were the free downloaders. I don't mind buying one if I know it will work and that the people will keep updating it to keep it working in the cat and mouse game that one of you mentioned. It has always been that way and is with a lot of things.
Do you really think that Chrome is responsible? I used to use Firefox all the time but haven't for a while. I was going to try Opera or some others to see if they were any better.
But for Chrome what downloader, whether free or paid, do all of you think is at least one of the best that approximates an ideal downloader as I have "wished" for?
Thanks! -
Chrome isn't the main issue as the extensions are developed independently from the browser. However, there are certain extensions that reportedly work better in Firefox.
As for the cat and mouse game, it's never will never end. Sometimes websites switch to a different encryption software that requires an extensive rewrite of the software, free or paid. Some developers may have also received a cease and desist letter and decided it's not worth the trouble to keep developing their software, free or paid.
Bottom line is the ONLY guaranteed way of saving a stream is screen capture. -
