However using youtube-dl, or rather in my case TVDownloader which is a front-end for the cmd line program so avoids all the complexities of parameters, I have just downloaded a program which I did not even know was on there and was about to be removed. In all a happy bunny.

try signing in with your email & password and then try downloading the video with youtube-dl

use latest youtube-dl and if your outside the uk use a vpn or a proxy also download everything you want now before they protect everything with DRM i suggest tvdownloader makes things more easy goodluck

I have the same issue as the OP except that my video plays in the browser (Chrome)

I am using the latest youtube-dl package also. I even tried the TVDownloader frontend but got the same error.

and use that mpd with ytdlp.

and this mpd is better protected, you can't download from that. Or I can't find a way.
Actually there's a way, use Stream Detector add on, it gives you a proper ytdlp instruction with the necessary parameters.

Once I found a video with parameters like that at the end of the link (it also had others called Signature and Key-Pair-Id). To download it I just had to add them as request headers using --add-header "Policy:value", etc.

It was an m3u8 link, but I guess it also should work with mpd links if they are not encrypted.

When not using Stream Detector, few F5 refreshes will eventually get you the "easy" mpd which can be viewed using developer tools -> network tab.
Stream Detector, no matter the refreshes should give you a code that will download regardless of the type of mpd you get.

Yes, you need to get the keys with Widevine Guesser and decrypt with mp4decrypt and merge with ffmpeg.
