  1. Program for VHS Capture Needed ---- No Success with VirtualDub or Amerec

My end purpose is capturing VHS video then editing in Adobe Premier Elements. I’m using a Windows 7 machine. I have a JVC VHS player w TBC, I have two different USB capture devices (Hauppauge USB-Live 2 and a Chinese V-Top), and I have spent more than one intensive week on this site learning VirtualDub. (I thank all who have responded to my questions.)

Using VirtualDub2 to capture, audio is ALWAYS out of sync to the video. I have made every adjustment recommended on this site, including making sure audio with capture is turned off, and fiddling multiple settings in the “Timing” dialog. No success.

I read that some others who could not obtain an in-sync capture with VirtualDub have had success with “AmerecTV” software. I downloaded Amerec 3.1 and installed it several times. In all cases, the screens were corrupted; the labels and lettering was not readable. I tried Amerec 2.1. It installed and the installation dialogs were properly readable, but it did not install an executable file. Obviously worthless.

    Can anyone assist?

    Thank you.

The AmarecTV 231 on this site is a portable zip,
just extract the files and run the executable

Thank you; this is exactly the ZIP I earlier downloaded and unzipped.
I installed the program, but AFTER installation there is NO executable (".exe") except for the UNINSTALL.
Even in the Windows "Start" screen, there is the AmarecTV button and thereunder an Uninstall button, but no button to open the program.
    Exactly what I found earlier.

    But thanks for the suggestion.

It's portable - there is no install. You extract the files and run amarectv.exe

  6. Ok, thanks.

I did get it to "install", here I mean that the files finally did extract and there is an executable named "amarectv.exe".

Thanks; now I'll test it out.

There is IIRC a setting in vdub to drop video frames to keep audio in sync.

But often sync issues are down to your PC not being able to keep up >> bad choice of video compression (which you must set BEFORE capturing else it will default to uncompressed and many systems could have issues with that)

Thank you for the suggestion. Indeed I had compression set to “No Compression”. I recall having set it that way in one of my ongoing VirtualDub learning/practicing sessions.

Although for these purposes I am using a Windows 7 machine, it is nonetheless well configured: SSD for OS and programs, separate (mechanical) scratch drive used only for capture (no other files on the drive).

After selecting one of the compression modes (rather than No Compression), there was some reduction in the degree to which VirtualDub was capturing out of sync audio and video. But it did not entirely solve the problem.

A separate, but related, matter: I am using a USB VHS-to-digital converter. (I have two such capture devices: a Chinese “V-Top” and a Hauppauge USB-Live 2.)

It takes a very careful reading, but in the VirtualDub help screen, and in greater detail in a post by lordsmith of this website, we are informed that if one uses a capture device that has both audio and video capture integrated, these usually use a shared clock to avoid sync errors between the streams. Thus, when “Automatically disable resync when integrated audio/video capture is detected” is enabled, this option causes VirtualDub to automatically disable auto-resync when such a situation is detected.

Well, as stated, I am using a USB capture device. Nonetheless, I still cannot obtain a properly synchronized video and audio stream.

Whether via VirtualDub or otherwise, I’ll keep at it.

    Thank you again.

Some people swear by Virtualdub capture and others never get it to work - that's about the size of it

I use Vdub for cropping and packing to HuffYUV, not so much for capturing.

No doubt I'll be using VirtualDub for many purposes --- especially some of the filters --- but for VHS capture, "I'm outa here".

You, and others, have helped me quite a bit over these past few days of intense learning of VirtualDub and many other matters of video, for which I thank you.
