  1. I have no idea what you people are talking about or why playlists matter. It's an incorrectly authored menu button.

Well I thought I had already explained that way back in reply #11 >> Two disks that respond incorrectly to menu selections and neither of which I think were authored incorrectly.

But I will leave this topic now (you will be pleased to read) since you can not or will not accept that logic.

is what I referred to. Or because the BD structure is very unlike a DVD it makes the difference.

But sorry to hark on. Makemkv would still have to select the correct playlist to navigate the rip completely. Same with a player when it loads the disk.
Reply #41 discusses MakeMKV's handling of DVDs, which MakeMKV will only rip in MKV format. I think this is a choice made by the developer, possibly because there are plenty of other programs that can rip DVDs in their entirety as files and folders but few that can decrypt a DVD and re-package the video as MKV files.

MakeMKV allows Blu-ray to be ripped either as individual videos in MKV files or as files and folders containing everything on the disc, including menus.

Ripping individual videos from Blu-ray as MKV files would certainly require using playlists. However, copying the entire contents of the entire Blu-ray disc, including the menus, as files and folders shouldn't require navigating any playlists.

I very much doubt that MakeMKV would introduce menu navigation errors into the file and folder copy, and PowerDVD would play the copy without encountering any region code conflicts. If there are menu navigation errors in the copy, they would have to be present in the original too.

  4. Just remembered I have the DVD version of this set from before I got a region free Blu-Ray player. Those menus are authored correctly, so I could get the info that way. Doesn't answer the actual question but does solve my problem.

I'm glad that you found an answer.

BDEdit could be an answer for some people but obviously it is not an answer for everyone because for this solution to work, the Blu-ray disc's menus have to be Java-based and the user needs to be knowledgeable enough to figure out how to use the program and must know how to interpret and correct the menu commands. However, if someone is able to successfully use BDEdit to correct the commands then PowerDVD would be used to play the corrected copy of the disc stored on their HDD and see the formerly inaccessible menus.
