I've found that the best multimedia desktops (apart from Apple), the Sony MX and Digital Studio series PCs are equipped with Pioneer DVD-R/RW drives, not with Sony's DVD+RW drives.
This may mean that DVD-R/RW is the way to go.
I think the new generation of DVD burners should support at least DVD-R, DVD-RW and optionally DVD+RW or DVD+R or DVD-RAM.

The best drive should support all DVD format because all have significant penetration today. DVD+R/RW are still rarely used but marketed to have bright future.

Does anyone have some rumors from the DVD giants Panasonic, Toshiba, Hitachi or anyone to create a universal combo drive?
I do not expect such a "unified" technical solution from either Pioneer or any member of the DVDplusRW organization, because they regard this DVD format case as a religious question.

  2. The best I could find is the new "Multi" DVD-R/RW/RAM drive from Sanyo, as seen here -- http://www.dv-info.net/cgi-bin/ib/ikonboard.cgi?s=3cd016031e1effff;act=ST;f=3;t=1 They say it should be out this summer...
