    I wonder if I can stream the subtitles or captions via HDMI from a playing video file with VLC or another software.

    HDMI lacks the ability to transmit subtitle streams or closed caption streams. When using HDMI, the ability to view subtitle or caption text depends entirely on the software player or hardware player used to play the video having the ability to decode the subtitle stream or closed caption stream and overlay the text on the video, making the text an integral part of the picture.

    I'm wondering if I can convert the HMI captions to analog composite closed caption with one of those cheap HDMI2AV converters...

    That idea cannot work because no existing version of HDMI is capable of carrying any form of closed captioning as data.
