  1. Is there a difference between the so called DVD-Ram for video recording and the DVD-Ram for PC? Is there a dvd-ram that can be used in both a standalone recorder and a pc dvd-ram drive?

    Any info would be appreciated.

There is a single DVD-RAM format for all devices.
But, you can get 80mm and 120mm discs,
single sided and double sided discs,
cartridged (removable or fixed) or non cartridged,
2.8 (double sided 8mm), 4.7 (single sided 120mm) and 9.4 (double sided 120mm) GB discs.
Some players cannot play (eg Hitachi GD-8000) cartridged DVD-RAM discs.

Also, often software for the computer uses UDF 1.5, although UDF 2.0 drivers are available. UDF 2.0 is what you need for the set top machines. The physical discs are the same however.

To maximize compatibility, if you buy the 4.7 GB discs get the ones with a removable cartridge. Most 9.4 media I've seen use non-removable cartridges but removable ones are also quite common if I remember correctly.
