Thanks to mtlynch at Reddit/Datahoarder for the link and tutorial.
I won't speak to his capture technique and hardware, but his implementation, additional script and use of it sounds like it may be something many users have asked for. Automation of scene changes and way to quickly utilize the info for editing.

mtlynch's tutorial: https://mtlynch.io/digitizing-1/
mtlynch's script: https://github.com/mtlynch/process-home-videos
This all goes over my head, especially since I haven't done any capture or editing in years, but it sounds interesting and hopefully helpful!

Author here. Thanks for sharing this post, lingyi!
I'm happy to help others if I can answer questions about automating scene editing. I'm not an expert at pyscenedetect, but I'm happy to help where I can there. I also wrote my own scripts, which are linked above. Those allow you to chop up a video file after entering the scene start and end frames in a spreadsheet. I'm happy to help people use those scripts as well. -
Thank you for joining and welcome to Videohelp and Digitalfaq!
I have a couple of questions, please.
First, a common issue, how well does it work (if you've tried it for this) for commercials or blank sections. Your estimated 80% accuracy rate is a huge step towards helping with this.
Second, if you could, would you mind helping the OP in this thread? https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/397420-Any-Free-Software-To-Make-A-Slideshow-From-A-Video
I'm still on 100% clear what he's trying to do, but from what I understand, he wants to automatically determine when the slides in a PowerPoint presentation converted into a video changes. Do you think this would be doable? -
