I have a movie file i got somewhere. It is in MP4 format, but when i tried to play it on my HDTV that plays media files, it won't recognize it. I have played many MP4 movies on my tv. Should i convert it again into an MP4? Or maybe i could use Recode? Please advise.

If your TV plays MKVs open it with MKVToolNixGUI and resave it as an MKV and try that. Sometimes it's something about the way the video and audio are combined that upsets a player. Having said that, every so often the Samsung TV here refuses to play something it should, for reasons I can't determine (2011 model), so I just use the Bluray player instead, but it's pretty rare. It's used daily for playing video and it happens maybe once every three or four months.

you can try to change the format profile level to g.e. high 3.0 with https://www.videohelp.com/software/H264-AVC-Level-Editor

Thanks! I had another movie i tried to play about 3 weeks ago. It wasn't even in the directory when i tried the tv's media player. I renamed the file to test.mp4 and it showed up in the directory! played! Very kooky! And you gave me an idea! To play the movie in my Blu Ray player! I hadn't thought of doing that. Thank you! Will try the MKV route, as well!
