Hello,
I've been trying to author a simple DVD with closed captions with the only goal to see how the TV decodes some SCC commands. I first converted to MPEG with AVStoDVD and then imported the mpg file to the project assets in DVDLab Pro (following the guide found here in VideoHelp) choosing to demux. Dragged the two files into the Movie field and selected the .scc file. However, when I tried to compile it, I got an error saying "An attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end," whose actual meaning I really don't know.
I didn't create any menu or transitions because, in my case for the moment, I only need the TV to display the captions; it'll work even if the video has a very low quality. But maybe I have done something wrong in the process.
Two things to consider:
- I created new folders for the output folder and the temporary folder (both in the same parent folder).
- I originally got the error that says there are open GOPs in the file, but after browsing around I found some people that say they really don't affect the process. Again, even if the video plays bad and the audio is not in sync with the video, it will work well for me because I'm only focusing on how the captions are displayed.
Thanks in advance. I would really appreciate your help.

As I stated in your other topic, I have no experience with closed captions in DVDLab Pro (and it is many, many years since I used this software) but...
I assume you followed this guide
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/254578-How-to-create-DVD-with-closed-captions
The menu, even a blank, empty, one could be the critical thing here.
IIRC The program also creates a log - not sure where it goes - and you should also check that. -
Could I make a simple suggestion.
"Do not run before you learn to walk"
By that I mean you get the simple things done first before you move on to the more complicated.
So you just create a basic dvd - no closed captions - and ensure that was authored without any error. And if you still get that error you know that the fault does not lie with the CC. -
Thank you very much for your reply.
I tried without the captions, but got the exact same error. It must have something to do with the video or audio file, or the process I'm carrying out. Also, I am not using an empty or blank menu; I selected the option "Movie Only."

I found a very old thread here with the same error, but no answer was provided. Still stuck with it. -
it's an old, no longer supported program for many years now. as such i'd install it in a folder other than crogram/anything and once installed right click on the executable and mark it to run as admin always. it sounds like the program can't find a required file which can happen when a program doesn't have enough rights.

Try to download that zip below, it includes proper m2v(7MB) and ac3 (0.2MB),
load them it into your project with single movie, drop m2v and then ac3 to movie1 timeline and try to compile DVD.
These are legit DVD files m2v made by HCEncoder, ac3 made by Aften I used for DV helper that automatically makes DVD's.
Just to check if it works with legit files. -
My install of this s/w is on a XP partition which I rarely access these days (useful for some progs that will not work on newer OS)
But I just run it with a clip which I knew was compliant (just like the ones that avstodvd will make) and I guess it will be of no surprise to you to read that the dvd was created with no issues other than the warning of open/closed GOPs which was expected.
What I will do is try to locate the installation files( which will be stored off-line) and see if I can also install it on my Win7 partition. Report back when I have more info. -
The demuxed files worked for me. (But then I expected them to)
I have this running in Win7 now. And, again, no issues either with muxed or de-muxed files. I do not have any CC files to check but the error is obviously not caused by that.
The only thing I can suggest is you post some screenshots at every stage of you attempting to author a dvd just to see if there is anything obvious where you have gone wrong. -
Seems to be Windows error, pops up on the net in various applications, for example

Thank you very much for these files, Al, with them I had the same error, so the problem must be with the win10 compatibility.
By the way, the resulting elementary streams in my case were .ac3 and .mpv, could this probably have something to do with the error? They were demuxed by DVDLab Pro, but still. -

UPDATE:
Okay, I created a virtual machine with Win XP and Hyper-V, installed DVDLab Pro 2.52 and tried with Al's files, and got the exact same error. Could it be the process I'm following or something wrong with the installation files? -
My suggestion is to provide screen-caps of each stage of your process. But if the VM is reliant on certain Win10 dlls (and this error seems to relate to these) I would also persue any errors in your Win10 installation. Possibly a bad update.

with the samples of _Al_ .. I compile without error in windows 10 ..

Which kinda proves my theory about the specific Win10 installation of the OP (or something else beyond our comprehension has influenced that installation)
So, again, to the OP , think back what you have installed - something that promised the earth. But un-installing that may not solve your problem. Only a full re-install with a HDD format might solve that. -
Hello, everyone.
It turns out there was something wrong with the file I had downloaded. I tried reinstalling and didn't work, tried with another computer running Win10 and still the same error, which is why I downloaded it again. I wouldn't have imagined this was the problem without all your suggestions. Now it worked with Al's files and my file, at least the compilation without the mentioned error.

It's a dummy menu. AFAIK the dvd spec must have the relevant files (see 'What is A DVD' top of this page) for a menu even if the player essentially ignores them or rather acts on the commands in the .ifo and proceeds to the movie.
-
That "menu" is a dummy PGC. It means it contains just some VM commands but no video or audio. That is how DVD navigation can work and also DVD structure is designed by "abstract layer" as they call it - a code designed by DVD Lab author that builds up DVD structure. So you can have some redundant things in a code, but navigation at the end just works of course. For example if you have a tool where you could design DVD navigation from scratch you might do things, navigation differently. Also DVD navigation has a thing called first play pgc so dvd navigation jumps from that PGC to some general code setting up VMGM (menu, which is dummy) and then to a title (PGC that contains video). In short DVD navigation could be done in thousand of ways.
-
I had to use another tool to burn the disc because DVDLab wouldn't do it. Tested with VLC and the captions were correctly muxed—or at least for the first 20 minutes. Now I only need to get a DVD player because I don't have one right now.
I want to thank all of you, DB83, Al, aedipuss and Sekininsha for all your help. This was great. -
you're welcome. we try.

And thank you too for coming back both with your updates and acknowledgements. Many do neither and just take things for granted.
