Hey all. Any video compression masters here?
I have a quicktime MPEG-4 640x480 ripped from VHS video that is 5 hours. It currently is 72 GB. I used handbrake to compress with h265 (RF20). Now its 8 GB and it looks great.
BUT
I downloaded a Game of Thrones 5 hour video at 1080p thats only 4GB and it looks amazing. So why is my 640 double that size still? Anyone know how I can get way better file compression out of handbrake and still make it look great?

Use a higher CRF to make it smaller. Use a slower x265 preset. Though x265 is not exactly recommended for SD content, as H265 is built around HD and UHD content. I mostly just stick with x264 for SD content.
Anyway you are asking vague and general questions, that don't have a definitive answer. -
Also, vhs rips, interlaced and generally noisy, both of which require higher bitrate

That last response hit the nail on the head.
Your vhs encode is a lossy Re-encode from a lossily-encoded 4:2:0 possibly-questionable SD master. It doesn't come from an HD (or better) color-corrected, professionally-lit, motion-controlled master, as GOT is.
All those pro things help make for a more efficient encoding.

use the x265 software script https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rebtkv4wtd9i7ra/AAD9FM4IVM5-_T5TgWBRhnDia?dl=0
rename .txt to .bat and execute after you put the file and the ffmpeg exe in the same folder
bitrate or crf can be edited in the .txt pretty easily
or try 1200kbit with x265 medium on Handbrake
