    So we have VVC coming out, AV1 already here, and now EVC is here.

    Clearly not "here" yet (vvc, evc) - you probably won't have a usable codec suite for another 3-5 years.
    And not necessarily alternatives, more like successors, and geared toward expanded applications. Just like hevc is the successor to avc and not necessarily a direct alternative (try to run hevc on an older, underpowered machine).

    But good news that teams aren't idle.
    I notice though that they mention that going forward will be increasingly more difficult with increasingly less return.

    With EVC, all I'm reading is that the standard is final which is either impressive or simply shows off how rushed it is. I'm only hearing about this now but I'm seeing talk about EVC just getting started back in April 2019. While VVC is still in development/testing. Well EVC better be amazing on performance or else AV1 is going to just going to turn them into a footnote, as the "Enhanced" EVC is not free.
