  1. I can rip an ISO or DVD folders just fine, but MakeMKV trips up and throws a LIBMKV_TRACE error which seems to be due to bad mastering.

So...what are my options here? Ideally I'd have exactly what MakeMKV gives me, a completely lossless file which retains chapter points and such. As I say I can rip to an ISO or DVD folders, so the data is all there.

I just googled your error and this was what came up for a solution: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2494
Try ripping with DVDFab or AnyDVD HD. You could also try using handbrake with libdvdcss.dll.

  3. Yeah, I found that thread as well. Pointing MakeMKV at the DVD folders ripped via AnyDVD failed too, as did attempting to rip without audio.

have you tried with dvdfab ??

  5. That's a bit outside my budget, especially for something that may or may not work.

dvdfab has a 30 day free trial, after the 30 days are up the program
reverts to the free HD Decrypter version.

  7. Reading a bit more, DVDFab just seems to be able to create ISO files or DVD Folders, which I already have.

Haven't used DVDFab in years (use AnyDVD on the rare occasion I need to), but according to the site, it can remux to .mkv even in the free version. https://www.dvdfab.cn/dvd-ripper.htm?trackID=headmenu2

The issue is that according to the MakeMKV forum link above, the issue is the audio track is malformed and if MakeMKV balks at that, so may DVDFab.

I find the issue interesting and found a possible workaround, though again it may balk at the deformed audio track. If it does, you can try converting the audio into another format such as PCM or MPEG-1 Layer2. I think you can convert AC3 with Audicity.

    1. Remux the .iso or .ifo with MakeMKV, but exclude the audio track. Be sure to retain the chapters and subs.
    2. Demux the DVD (.ifo) with PgcDemux, by adding the main movie ifo. Choose the audio only since you have everything else in the .mkv from MakeMKV
    3. Remux the .mkv and audio with MKVToolNix.* There's a potential for an audio sync issue which you'll have to fix by adding or removing a delay with Audacity.

*MKVToolNix won't accept the demuxed chapter and .sup files, audio only.

I did a test and it worked (AFAIK) perfectly.

Good luck and let us know if it works for you!

Did you try excluding the audio from the ripped files like I suggested in my post above?

If that doesn't work, read the following threads on how to replace the audio on a DVD.

I forgot about those threads while trying to work it out on my own, stumbling through the process without the guidelines. The key in your case is that it's highly likely the audio that's malformed and you'll probably have to fix that to remux to .mkv.

  10. Excluding the audio in MakeMKV still fails, whether from a ripped ISO or from the original disc itself.

What is the name of the movie? Have you downloaded the latest version of MakeMKV version 1.15.1 MakeMKV v1.15.1 (15.4.2020 )

Added support for AACS v76 (for those poor souls without LibreDrive)
Improved handling for discs with mastering errors
Many internal improvements and small bugfixes
    Bug fixes:
For some HD audio streams frames were dropped incorrectly on segment boundaries
SONY 75" Full array 200Hz LED TV, Yamaha A1070 amp, Zidoo UHD3000, BeyonWiz PVR V2 (Enigma2 clone), Chromecast, Windows 11 Professional, QNAP NAS TS851

Yep, looking up LIBMKV_TRACE errors on the MakeMKV forum, it's either a program bug or mastering error. If the latest update doesn't work, post an error log to the MakeMKV forum as they're the ones who can fix it on the software side. It's possible the video or/and the audio is malformed or the pressing itself is bad.

In the meantime, try DVDFab or demux with PGCDemux and remux with MKVToolNix.

Edit: Also try different readers, to remove hardware as an issue.

  13. It's SummerSlam 1988 from the SummerSlam Anthology box set released in 2007. Every other disc in the set has ripped just fine.

  14. I don't have another drive but given the ISO ripped fine it seems unlikely.

    Updating MakeMKV didn't help either.

Part of troubleshooting is being able to test and eliminate possibilities. I highly recommend having a spare drive for test purposes. The ripping part of MakeMKV, as you've experienced works very different from other programs, which BTW, you haven't said what you're using for straight rips. There's definitely something wrong with the disc or the reader you have since it's from 2007 and if it was a widespread issue, MakeMKV would have been updated to address it. BTW, have you played your rip all the way through? There could be some errors that your decrypter didn't report.

I don't know about Australia, but I just saw some external DVD writers as low as $20 on Amazon. Over the decades I've been using PCs, I've learned to keep two of everything, I even have the parts to build a complete second i7 PC that I have to get around to, in addition to my laptop and dedicated video playing PC. This is especially critical now as you typically can't just drive out to store and pick up the parts you may need.

  16. PGCDemux did the job, but doesn't include the chapters.

    Tried DVD Decrypter?

  19. I tried ChapterXtractor to output the chapters in OGG format and use MKVToolnix's Chapter Editor to add them to the MKV file, but they seem off. They seem to start out alrightish, and then drift earlier and earlier relative to where they should be over the course of the file. Issues with the correct frame rate maybe?

Here's the raw data from ChapterXtractor:
    Code:
    Total film length : 02:28:49:90

    Chapter 1 = 00:00:00:00
    Chapter 2 = 00:00:21:20
    Chapter 3 = 00:02:26:03
    Chapter 4 = 00:24:38:76
    Chapter 5 = 00:27:41:76
    Chapter 6 = 00:35:59:43
    Chapter 7 = 00:37:28:96
    Chapter 8 = 00:47:02:60
    Chapter 9 = 00:48:32:96
    Chapter 10 = 00:58:45:03
    Chapter 11 = 01:06:50:13
    Chapter 12 = 01:13:07:93
    Chapter 13 = 01:20:33:46

    Chapter 18 = 01:46:10:33
    Chapter 19 = 02:03:41:93

I'm not sure how to calculate fractions of seconds for 29.97fps video so I'm not sure if those agree with each other.

EDIT: Actually, despite using colons in the first list that appears to be fractions of a second too, so...never mind. Still not sure why the chapters lose sync, however.

EDIT 2: Additionally, the file is actually 2:28:58, not 2:28:49.

Another thought. You said MakeMKV won't work on an .iso or the original disc. Have you tried using it directly on the files extracted from the .iso? Just eliminating possibilities.

A shot in the dark, but maybe the 100th/sec addition in the OGG file is cumulatively causing the sync error?

If that doesn't work, suggest you start a new thread for the sync error as the major issue, remuxing to .mkv is solved and I'm the only one actively posting on this thread.
