  1. I'll apologize in advance if this is a subject that's been covered already, but I've Google searched this subject & not seen any solutions appear in search results.
I have a large dvd collection (1300+) which takes up a large amount of space. A few months ago I contemplated upgrading to Blu-ray for the full hd experience, but rather than spending the money & still taking up room I decided to go the Amazon download route. However I was most disappointed to find that anything I purchase can only be viewed on the Amazon app & when I checked with other download providers, similar rules seem to apply.
Is there any way that I can buy a legitimate downloaded video which I will then be able to store on an external hard drive which can be plugged into any TV in the house via the USB socket.
I've no objection to playing fair & paying my way for my films as I did with the DVDs, but I don't want to have to watch them on PC or phone because they're all tied to apps. Obviously I can understand why they do this to a certain extent as it's related to anti-piracy, but in my mind, if I buy it at full price then I should be able to watch it as easily as if I bought the disc.

I just searched the web and found this: https://forums.tomsguide.com/faq/how-to-download-netflix-content-onto-your-memory-card.212422/
    https://www.tunefab.com/itunes-movie/save-itunes-movies-to-external-hard-drive.html
I'm sure if you search the web you'll find something similar. Personally, I think that ripping it to your harddrive would be easier.
    Good luck!

  3. When you say ripping it, do you mean as in from Netflix etc or rip from my DVDs & box them up once they're done?

If you subscribe to Amazon Prime video, can you access your Amazon purchased movies?
This may be a solution if it works, otherwise you're at the mercy of the DRM restrictions
