  1. I have a few 8mm(?) analogue camcorder tapes (PAL) I'm trying to record onto VCD as I have a DVD player that will (theoretically) play them.

I've read the guides here on capturing and looked at the stuff on interlacing and the question I have is this:

Do I need to capture at greater than 352x 288 and then de-interlace the AVI before encoding to Mpeg1 if I'm going to play the resulting VCD on a TV?

    Will I get a better quality image if I capture at 720 * 576?

  2. If you want to make a VCD, capture at 352x576. Then let Tmpgenc resize, deinterlace and convert the AVI to mpeg-1.

If you want to make a SVCD, then capture at 480x576. Encode in interlaced mode to mpeg-2 with Tmpgenc.

  3. Thank you!

Edit: Having downloaded and run it and also had a look at

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencexplained.htm

is the way to deinterlace to use the filter under advanced? If so, which method is the best?

    Is the resize automatic?

  4. The best resolution depends heavily on the bitrate you're going to encode at. A rough estimate:
    1.0-1.3Mbps (VCD): 352x240
    1.3-1.8Mbps: 320x480
    1.8-2.5Mbps: 352x480
    2.5-4Mbps: 480x480
    4-6Mbps: 640x480
    6+Mbps: 720x480

(240/480 is for NTSC, 288/576 for PAL)
