  1. I am new to this but is it possible to convert WMV (Windows media video) files to Avi format? My video editors don't seem to accept WMV input. Thanks.

  2. I think Virtual Dub v1.3c or earlier could open .wmv and .asf files (but don't quote me on that).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. i received a wm file once , and i try almost everything to encode to avi. The earlier versions of vdug had this option , but it kept crashing my system, the other solution was to try movieXone it did the job and finally was able to encode to mpg.. check the tools section for that link on movie x one , is abit slow but it does the job.

  4. Here's a method I recently figured out that doesn't require a lot of hassling with graphedit. I came up with it mostly because graphedit STILL didn't work. When I use graphedit or tmpgenc, the conversion freezes after a few dozen frames.. if I'm lucky, I can tweak settings or use no sound and get a partial conversion with tmpgenc.. but -anyway- ...
Here's a reliable method that works even when you're dealing with wmv1/wmv2.

    1. Get windows media encoder at www.windowsmedia.com.
    2. Run it, and do Session ---> new session wizard.
    3. Choose "convert" .. currently third option.. and leave the bottom box checked. Click next.
    4. Browse for your WMV or ASF file, and specify the output file's name and directory. Click next.
    5. Choose second option (..will play directly on a comuter) and click next.
    6. Create and manage profiles button... click new... give it a name and leave it at "compressed"... click next... choose the very bottom options... next...
    7. Here's the key step that makes it all work. Under video codec choose "windows media MPEG-4 video v3"
    8. Click finish
    9. Close the manage profiles box.
    10. Click finish

If all that worked, what we just did is re-encode the wmv with a codec Virtualdub 1.3 recognizes.

Now open your newly encoded file (not the source file! remember, you made an output file and directory?) in Virtualdub 1.3.

For video choose direct stream copy.
For audio choose direct steam copy.
save as AVI, and in seconds it should work. It doesn't need to redo the entire movie apparently.

  5. Darn if I didn't have to pull out the stops to get the new Harry Potter trailer into a MPEG off AOL. Thanks!
