  1. Tape to dvd is limited by 2 factors.
    A. Mpg lossy compression.
    B. 9 mbps~ max average bitrate

Vhs to pc doesn't have these two limitations.
A much higher bitrate along with lossless codec availability immediately gives noticeable differences in quality, thus better.

    ...

Other threads have posts showing this difference and YouTube.
Up to you if you want to setup the entire vhs to pc capture to get the best captures possible or not.

That is true, but the OP was talking about ripping a DVD, and as I said, "in that context", the ripping operation is lossless. The discussion was about transferring the DVD to the computer, not the encoding to the DVD in the first place. The OP's concern had to do with losing quality when ripping a DVD and I simply wanted to reassure him that ripping does not degrade the DVD.

Actually, Vegas can smart render MPEG-2 (although it has some limitations). However, I totally agree that the other tools you mention, along with ffmpeg, are better tools to use when doing cuts-only editing of MPEG-2.

    Quick Update.
    1950 to 2001- VHS....
Transferred some to DVD by copy and paste the images (VOB etc) onto PC
Tranfered the rest from DVD, using a program (maybe Ulead) as MPEG 2. They show as .mpg in explorer

    2002 to 2011.....DV
Transferred DV tapes using the JVC DV camera directly to PC via Firewire. These were AVI's.

Now because of this site, I learned that the VOB files can be dragged directly into Movie Studio timeline. Other wise if you use the "Open files" in the MS the VOB files are not seen.

Thanks for helping me sort out my mess.!!

If anyone is interested I asked Vegus software support communitythe following. I added the reply to each question.

1-Is .mpg the same as MPEG-2?
    Answer-Yes.

2-When transferring from DVD is it done as lossless file transfer with MS?
Answer:Vegas will smart-render mpeg-2 if the output properties are identical to the source and "No Recompression Required" is shown in the preview screen. You may educate yourself by typing "smart render" into a forum search and that is one preferred method for learning basic skills. While you're at it, search for "Gary James Method" for a nifty way to import a whole DVD Title to the timeline.

3- In the past I have simply copied and pasted the DVD VOB files directly to the PC. Is that the best way to have a lossless transfer and how does it compare to using MSP to transfer as .mpg MG2?
Answer; VOB = Mpeg-2 = .MPG. Clear enough?

4- My goal is to have lossless as possible when transferring home movie DVD's to my PC for future editing.
Answer; Understood. You are encouraged to start your learning curve here, and post back with informed questions when they arise.
