Um, not being an american, is this guy in power and is it likely that allowing parents/grandparents and a smattering of young people to die "for the sake of the economy", would become public policy ? https://twitter.com/QasimRashid/status/1242265306040598530
I thought our pollies were sub-ordinary ! Won't be long before I see this in Aus I suppose.
I wonder how may people dying for someone else's money would be the right number ?

Here in Australia the Federal government has closed down everything except essential services like super markets, petrol stations. All restaurants and cafes are closed except for takeaway or home delivery. In Sydney we are very much a cafe society so it will hit hard especially the younger people. I'm 81 so have to be extra careful. Lots of people wearing masks and hand washing before and after handing anything in public. We are required to keep about 1.5m away from everyone. All cinemas, sporting events have been closed down. The only bright spot is out parliament has become quite cooperative and mange to pass a massive financial package, debated and passed in less than a day. They even agreed to more than half the number of representatives in the House. Quite remarkable actually as our conservative government has been vehemently opposed to any hint of Keynesian pump priming finance, now there appears to be no limit!! Most beaches are closed, even though it's Autumn here, due to climate change it's still quite warm. The sea temperature at Bondi last week was 26 degrees Celsius.... So far I'm ok. Flu vaccines are free and become available next week. I'm keeping isolated as much as possible. What is it with toilet paper hoarding? We make it and there is no manufacturing shortage? Super markets are now limiting the amount you can buy to one 28 roll pack per customer. Strange times we live in..... Oh yes a research medical institution in Brisbane is working on a cure, an old and safe HIV drug appears to rid the body of the virus along with an old malaria treatment. So there might be light at the end of the tunnel...

Yep. Except that we qualify for the limited "special needs" Woolworth's online ordering ... and it isn't available to buy
Nor is disinfectant nor disinfectant wipes. Nor crackers.
The gov't told everyone there is no need to buy and hoard (they'll be fine though!!) ... how can one believe them?

Who said it is not an American thing to protect others? I said nothing of the kind. Do you really think that you know what can work to protect others better than the CDC does? Since masks are hard to find and reserved for medical use, social distancing is the rule of the day in your country to protect one's self and others. I noted that I am doing that and that I observed others doing the same thing.
Maybe this will set you straight about me. 7 years ago I had the flu and had to go out in public when I would have otherwise been at home in my bedroom avoiding others as people normally do when they are sick. My mother could no longer drive. There was nobody else available to buy long twin sheets for the rented hospital bed that was to arrive that day so my father could die in home-hospice care. I had an uncontrollable cough. However, at the time cloth surgical-type masks were readily available at the local dollar store and there was no government order requiring them to be reserved for medical use, so I wore a mask when I went out to buy sheets.Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329

I posted about such ideas being seriously discussed earlier in this thread. Yes, he is in power, and he is not the only one expressing such views on social media and the sort of news outlets that appeal to like-minded people. Unfortunately, such people's influence extends all the way to Washington, DC.
There was an official statement yesterday from he who must not be named indicating general agreement with this opinion. I'm certain a number of state and city governments will refuse to carry out the order.Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329

I'm a loner (by choice!) so no woman here.
. Most stores are out of toilet paper here too.
I'm personally most affected that all sport has been cancelled. I'm working with live sport results when I'm not managing VideoHelp.
I allow some politics in this thread. But please stay away from personal attacks.

All this politico talk and irked responses from some in this time of crisis remind me of George Romero's Dawn of The Dead's Richard France's scientist character:

Yesterday the UK Govrnmt announced stricter 'lockdown' controls. Effectively all shops apart from those principally selling food, medicines, pet food, bicycles ???, some hardware (IIRC) and newspapers have been told to close until further notice. Most public places including libraries, churches(weddings are off but, funerals will be allowed) will also close although parks will remain open for exercise with trust in those who use them will not gather in numbers. These measures were a direct reaction to the weekend when masses of people were seen to be taking advantage of warmer days and 'mixing'.
There was also a stern reaction to a retailer of a large sports clothing chain who initially thought he was providing an 'essential' service and was going to remain open. They have now changed their mind.
These measures will be reviewed after 3/4 weeks as it is hoped that if people do act responsibly the outbreak can be contained and life can return to normal much quicker.
One thing I can not get my head around is that this started in a part of China that I had never heard of before. Yet it spread really quickly and some countries, Italy especially, are really having a bad time of it. So thoughts to all out Italian friends at this time and, for once, I do mean all.
-
I wish we in Aus would do that now, and be ahead of the curve. Lockdown like NZ.
But no, the gov't won't close schools and poses "education is essential" as part of the mis-direction reasoning

Schools are not exactly closed here. They remain open for the children of those parents who are performing essential services - health being in the fore.
My sister is a teacher and she said over the weekend (by phone not personal contact) that the staff are effectively job-sharing. So she will not work every day.
In a free democracy no one like being told what to do. The hard part is to get the airheads on board. And sometimes those with the least between their ears make the decisions that affect the most.

You , yourself. Ad you also send me to stay home as a mental case not handling it as a proper American, you know, pretend like no viruses are around and dodge them by pure thought of an American will or something.
You take it personally thinking a foreign is yapping what you should do. Simple. But I am American too and I am sorry, stupid is simply stupid. And why do you bring what politicians are saying, recomend. If there is no masks, if there is no COVID19 tests, they will not tell you wear masks and go and get test. It is not ready, so how can recommend something like that? Why do you need to listen what they have to say and blindly follow?
You can make a protected gear yourself, I already mentioned that earlier that are even better that those cheapest grades from store, it is a common occurrence in Europe right now. Why would you bring it up again. Just get over with it , yes, you can make those yourself. To say they are not needed because we do not have it is a nonsense. Even young join this whose mask looks cooler, they found out it could be colorful with funny stuff on it etc. Sure doctors and nurses need higher grades and protection but that is another story. It is even happening in a large scale elsewhere, folks even made stuff for doctors and nurses themselves at the beginning when stuff was nowhere to be found.
If you feel to tell me go back to Europe for saying that, put in a bold font, go ahead, let i go if it helps you, but it is as it is.Last edited by _Al_; 24th Mar 2020 at 10:15.

Absolutely, it might not work right now, or it would start a sort of discussion. It is nice to talk to folks while standing a line, because it is anonymous and folks are usually open, they say stuff otherwise would not.
Some story, at the beginning of month, not sure 5th, 6th, I was in line in driving facility. There was one nervous lady trying to figure out if she had proper docs for that new "real ID card". So we talked what she needs. At that time there were news from Italy already, numbers went up. No protection of course, folks in lines head to head. So we talked and at the end she mentioned , btw real natural born American as it could be, so she mentioned as well, she should have something against virus. That it seams like nothing is going on, she said it is surreal. I told her , sure there is at least 1-3 folks here that have it already right now at this room (~300 people). Then something happened I totally did not expect. It threw me off on the spot, because she started to laugh. She thought that I said a joke. But beside joking before I was not, did not even sell it like that.
Also there was an extra line with elderly, they were jumping ahead like it is set up there, so they do not have to wait that long, folks barely walking even with sticks and gadgets, 60 to 80 year old, right next to all of us. It was clear at that time that elderly get hit most and I wanted to start a discussion with a guard, that he should set it up so there is more distance between them to protect them. Did not do it. I left building regretting that I did not say anything.

Markings are being added to floors everywhere to show people where to stand. Sneeze guards are being installed to protect workers at checkouts. Stores offer disinfectant wipes at the door and a fair number of people are carrying and using hand sanitizer of some sort.
You really need to stop worrying about how we elderly cripples are being disregarded by younger people and stop accusing everyone not wearing a mask and gloves of having bad intentions or being stupid/ignorant. It simply isn't true.
If you want people to wear masks and gloves you had better be prepared to hand them out because a great many people do not have masks and disposable gloves at home, can't buy them ready-made now, have no cloth suitable for making a mask, and can't buy material to make one because stores that sell it are closed. Most vacuum cleaners don't even use bags anymore and the bags are not always easy to find. I switched to a bagless vacuum years ago on account of the bags being scarce.Ignore list: hello_hello, tried, TechLord, Snoopy329

I will stop this ,I hit a wall with some regarding how viruses should be treated.
Other thought though, imagine scenario where they impose face masks as mandatory , that would include Chicago, Detroit etc. That would render any surveillance systems useless. Some would gladly jump on the wagon, as soon as they realized advantages, wearing masks for whatever reason. Someone up there , somewhere might think like that.
Or other places, you have no control who is walking on airports etc., other places of interest. ... So masks are not needed.Last edited by _Al_; 24th Mar 2020 at 13:32.

Not wearing protective gear is stupid/ignorant right now. No exceptions.
and can't buy material to make one
You need:
- paper towels
- piece of paper
- aluminium foil
- tape
- rubber bands
- hole puncher
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUvWbyj6MFQ
There are many videos for DIY masks on Youtube, but I like the one above for fitting well for hours.
Before the "masks don't work, duh" crowd injects theirs 2 cents (which isn't even worth a pair of pennies), the point of a face mask is not to completely purify the air. Even surgical masks don't do that. It's to prevent YOU from from spreading the disease, YOU from touching your face, as well as possibly prevent INBOUND airborne germs (COVID-19 suspends longer in the air in humidity), or even BLOCK morons that are too close (and their spittle hits your nose/mouth).
You also don't need "rubber" gloves, just any kind of gloves. You can even stick your hand inside a grocery bag. The goal is to prevent skin-on-surface contact. The gloves do not need to be trashed, but do need time to naturally disinfect themselves (sunlight, several days in the garage, etc), or use generous dose of Lysol.
Some people are overthinking this. Safety does not require specific masks and gloves.
In the past 9 years that you've been a VH member, haven't you learned that most surveillance systems are already useless?
Video surveillance more often is a feel-good placebo, artificial deterrent, than an actual tool for "catching bad guys". How many videos are posted to the site every year, where you can't see much of anything identifiable about the person? Sure, hit and run, smash and grab, but that's about all you can see. Not faces or license plates. At best, make/model of the vehicle, male/female, black/white, etc.
Some of our politicians seem to believe in wishful thinking, unicorn horn, and pixie dust.Last edited by lordsmurf; 24th Mar 2020 at 23:23.

my prediction is the usa is in for a big shock soon. even though the orange one wants restrictions removed by easter, it's still a coming storm. comparing the usa infection curve to italy's in a week the usa may hit 100,000 infections and in 3 weeks that number may approach 1 million. the usa is in it's 3rd week of the curve and it's a steep one. china took 3 months to get to the top...

The way it looks, those who should self-quarantine or be really cautious, in cities, did not do it well. Those outside of metropolis are still about week or two ahead and also restrict themselves a bit more just what they are going to see is happening near by. So yet again what is going on, only after it affects a region, state, country folk start to really pay attention, even with warnings all over the media and such.
And, adding, same as in Europe, parents and others get nervous about their daughters, sisters staying in a metropolis starting to be afraid AND so they are coming home , some of them delivering a present. Or whole families are leaving big cities looking for a refuge. Same happened in Europe two weeks ago and some folks got really pissed. For example when suddenly two, three families are arriving to some village at the end of the World. So the story continues. I guess it is inevitable those repeated scenarios, its just how humans behave not remembering something like this from before.Last edited by _Al_; 24th Mar 2020 at 18:00.

Greetings from Mexico City. Here we have less than a hundred confirmed infected, around 400 nationwide and four or five dead related to Covid-19. Obviously those are the official figures and real numbers are surely higher. No schools (every level) since yersterday and the Goverment has declared today we´re entering phase 2 with non essential public services being stopped or working at minimum levels, theaters, concerts, museums, etc are closed for at least two weeks from now. Social distancing has been recommended for the last few weeks but the goverment has no plans to enforce any kind of curfew, at least the central goverment (due to human rights issues) but some towns are known to implement some measures of their own. Unfortunately Stay at home practices are hard to follow in a country such as this but those of us who can are doing it (I went today to the supermarket to get some food and supplies, few people with masks or gloves-we´ve been told that is not that necessary unless you´re sick and such, the emphasis is on washing hands and keeping our distance from one another-and supplies are still good, not that many people have gone into panic shopping) The next couple of weeks I´ll try to stay at home all the time, I live in a well populated area of the city but its a single house, not an apartment so t´s somewhat easier to keep things under control. the worst is surely yet to come and the whole country is bracing for impact. Good luck and best wishes to all of you.
