As I moved to a larger monitor 32" screen, 4K resolution, I'm having some problems using several video programs I have always used concerning characters size, which influences many things during operation.

Some programs I'm referring to are Vidcoder, Subtitle Workshop 2.5 and MKVMerge, which more or less are affected, making adjusting the settings very difficult.

How should I proceed to set things right?

I have already lowered the maximum resolution to 2560 x 1440, and set text to +150% enlargement.

Should I use DPI adjustment instead?

  2. As you've found, Windows is terrible at scaling this way. Programs and dialog boxes are often messed up. Your best bet is to avoid it and use the screen Magnifier when necessary. 32" is way too small for 4K.

I didn't really care about 4K, even if at short distance, like I use it on my computer, it did make a small difference.

    What is the Screen Magnifier?

You can always run at 1920x1080 and let the monitor upscale. Of course, a much cheaper 1920x1080 monitor would have been fine.

Windows has a built in screen magnifier. In Win7 it's Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Ease of Access -> Magnifier. In Win10 just type "mag" in the search bar, then select the Magnifier App. Or Start -> Windows Ease of Access -> Magnifier. You can connect it to a mouse button or keyboard key for easy access. I have it connected to the middle mouse button -- click to toggle it on/off. And I use it in full screen mode where it zooms in 2x (or more) on the screen' the zoom follows the mouse around.

  5. As a side note: In mkvtoolnix-gui you can change the font under: "MKVToolNIX GUI->Preferences->General options-> Font&size"

Look at how truncated the setup screen looks on Vidcoder.

Can Screen Magnifier do anything to solve that?

  7. Yes, run at 3840x2160 with 100 percent font sizes and use Magnifier when you need to zoom in to read something.

Thanks, I just tried the Magnifier and it's not practical.

What about using DPI? How do you manage it?

I need characters to be larger to start with, because I'm 72. So I need larger characters to start with.

But I would prefer to keep the high resolution for films & videos.

Did you try it in full screen mode?

DPI is the same thing as the font scaling your using. It's not practical! And there's nothing you can do about it.
