  1. OK guys i need you all to help me with TMPGEnc settings to get the best possible picture quality from a conversion of a divx file to an MPG format! The mpg files will NOT be stored on a cd! They will be stored on a hard drive so i wont need to worry about file size! These movies will be played on a tv so i have to get the best possible picture from them........

please help...... I could not find any info.....

  2. So your gonna keep the xcard and go through all this

in TMPGenc the highest quality would be svcd.

I would say you could probably use the same bit rate you already have (But I might be confused)
We were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked?

  3. Actually in TmpGenc the best quality available is even higher than DVD, just use a ridculously high bitrate and as much resolution as you can handle. Remember tho, you cant really improve on the quality of the original and after a certain point any quality improvements will be practically unnoticeable. DVD spec is probably a good compromise.

You must first realise that by encoding to MPG1/2 you will not get any more quality out of the DivX file... the encoded video can only be as good as the source you give it.

In fact, you are more than likely to lose quality during the reencode. The DivX file will have lost a lot of the video information already (DivX is a very lossy format) and a re-encode will only make it worse.

If you do go ahead and re-encode then use a substantially higher bitrate than that used by the DivX file. The DivX algorithm is tuned for low bitrates, whereas the two MPEG algortihms are tuned for higher rates (MPEG2 especially)

However, if you are storing the video on your PC and watching it through a TV-OUT card then you might as well leave it as DivX as you will have nothing to gain by reencoding.

  5. Thanks guys for your respond. I do realise anytime i decode a divx file its going to lose quality. I wanted to know what would be the best setting with TmpGenc to minimise the quality loss when im decoding it into a MPEG file. I wanted the best unnoticeble decoding loss setting that can be done.....

Bugster: according to your statement, you recommend using the DVD settings under TmpGenc. what would be the determining quality factor of a movie.... is it the resolution or the bitrate? If the movie was originaly recorded in 480x480 if i up the resolution to something higher wouldn't it get blocky?

  6. Yeah crazylegs, you are right about resolution, no real point increasing it as far as I can see, not for playing on a comp that is. So I suppose its the high bitrate you need to achieve best quality. With the Divx movies I have seen I doubt there is much point going above DVD type bitrates, and with some you could probably get away with much less without noticing the difference. Really depends on the uqality of the original encode.
