problems converting *.avi to *.mpg

i'm trying to convert a *.mov file to *.mpg, by converting it to *.avi first. the first conversion is no problem, but the problem occurs when i try to use Tmpgenc to convert it to mpeg. i have watched the original *.avi file and its fine, but when i encode it to mpeg (or when i preview the conversion), all i get is a blank screen with the sound.
any idea what i'm doing wrong?

Try using a different version of TMPGEnc. This sometimes can help (don't ask me why, but I have encountered the same problem myself). Should this too not succeed, try using the PANASONIC MPEG Encoder which doesn't seem to be too fussy.
