  1. I cant seem to capture at resolutions above 320x240 in virtual dub with my ATI TV wonder USB. All I really want is 352x240 for NTSC VCD but I cant even do that. I know this card can work because the ATI software lets me capture at 352x240 no prob. The problem with the ATI software is that it drops alot of frames and my audio is completely out of sync withe video.
If I try to change the capture resolution in virtual dub, it gives me "error 418 Unsupported video format". If I ignore that and try to capture it says "error 425 out of memory for video buffer"
I read that disabling overlay helps but I didnt for me. I even de-selected preview and still no go. Can anyone help me out here?
    Thanks

  2. "unsupported video format" usually means you need to choose a different color format from the list on the right side of the Custom Format dialog box. It might not have anything to do with the picture size.

I'm not familiar with the USB model, so I can't tell you which color format will work. (Usually YUY2 and UYVY are good choices.) If you haven't done it already, try each listed Color Format until you find the ones that work.

  4. open Vdub and go to capture mode
    open VIDEO then FORMAT
set this to 320*240 and YUV2
then go to VIDEO then SET CUSTOM FORMAT
then set it to 352*240 YUV2 4:2:2 Interleaved

if it gives you a error doing this, then your color depth might be set wrong for the codec you have selected for capturing.

  5. Thanks for the replies but still not working. I get the same error. I think the error I'm getting could be from either the wrong data format or from an invalid capture size. If I try changing the data format, even at 320x240 I get an error. I also get an error when I increase the capture size (for a data type that worked at 320x240).
It doesnt seem like theres a simple solution to this problem.

  6. I get the "error 425 out of memory for video buffer" error in vdub when I try to capture vertical res above 288 with my wintv go card.
Avi_IO and freevcr have no problems though and drop less frames than virtual dub. Worth a try if you have no luck with vdub

  7. This will work, i've done it myself with the hauppague wintv usb card (usb cards suck).

you can turn on the resize filter when capturing. Video-->filters-->resize, and set up the size you want in the resize filter configuration. Your card probably doesnt support anything else but 320x240 capture, but the filter will convert it on the fly and save it to a 352x240 avi.

make sure you enable filters when capturing -- theres a checkbox on the pulldown menu to do that.

  8. Thats cool, I think it will work, but I cant seem to find the checkbox to enable filtering when capturing. I'll search a little more but thanks alot for the tip. I dont see why it shouldnt work.
BTW, are you able to capture 30 fps at 352x240? If so, what is your system config?

    Thanks.
    (your right, USB sucks)

  9. I found the checkmark your talking about. Too bad the filtering only works with RGB cuz now the file size is way too big. Oh well, not much i can do i guess

  10. 30 fps? i wish. . . I get a max of around 27 fps if i'm lucky. Doesnt matter if i'm capturing to uncompressed avi or divx, the card always drops frames. CPU isnt maxed out (usually the maximum cpu usage during capture is 70-80 and it jumps around alot), the hard drives can write much faster than is need to catch 30 fps. The problem is definatly with the USB bus. This is on a p3 850 btw. I'm definatly gonna get another capture card when i can afford a decent one.

if you can deal with the dropped frames, you can get a good picture with a smaller file size if you use the huffyuv codec or one of the mpeg4 codecs (ms mpeg4v2, divx low motion or Opendivx) with a 2000 bitrate (at 2000 you won't notice artifacting or blockiness at all). That'll give you a small enough file size to easily work with.
