I would like to use my mouse scroll wheel with a modifier to zoom in and out of the frame. That is to keep my window size intact but zoom into the media. I know that CTRL+left click does that but I'd rather use the wheel.
Is that possible at all? I cannot find a way to achieve that.

It looks it's not possible, you can use external program, like HotkeyP (free), this way you can use even mouse shortcuts, which are better IMHO, I use them, e.g. right button + left, right button + wheel and so on...
