  1. Im using Windows XP with a AMD 2100+, 512mb, Barracuda 80GB HD.

When trying to encode a DIVX file to MPEG 2 (DVD) using the highest quality setting it takes close to 20 hours to encode an 730 mb DIVX file. Why is that.

  2. The answer to your question is both simple and complicated. The simple answer is you are using the highest quality setting, drop down to the next setting and you should see a significant improvement in encode times with little or no noticeable difference in quality. Other improvements in encode time can be achieved by using TmpGenc to encode video only, let your DVD authoring program do the video/audio multiplexing (extract the audio from the Divx using Vdub, pref to an uncompressed wav file resampled to the correct sampling rate (48khz) if neeeded.

I won't go into the complicated reason except to say that Mpeg2 encoding is a very complex process.

@bugster - you use tmpgenc for DVDs? I have heard it sucks at DVDs.

@RS1800 - I would worry less about speeding tmpegenc up and more about getting CCE-it is 4 times faster and does better with blocks, IMO
    End of Line.

  4. Yes I use TmpGenc for DVd encoding and it works pretty good as long as you keep the bitrate up. CCE may be better but I cannot afford it right now!
