I am copying a .DAT file from a VCD to my hard drive by dragging the icon from the E: to C: drives. This is usually no problem. With this new VCD it is apparently copying the whole file and after 9 minutes when there are only 5 seconds left, an error message pops up telling me that the computer can no longer find the file (AVSEQ01.DAT), perhaps because it has already been moved or deleted.
Is this some kind of block or protection? Any way to get around it?

This is probably because there is an unrecoverable error on your VCD.
In any case, you should use VCDGear to extract/convert the DAT file on a VCD back to a standard MPEG file. This takes no longer than copying the file, fixes corrupted bits of the MPEG and you don't loose any quality.
