From lordsmurf's VCR buying guide at digitalfaq.com:
"Not suggested: 2x00, 3x00, 4x00, 5x00 and 6x00 series. None of these have TBCs. Anything older than HR-Sx500 lacks the features required, and is either an 1980s or early 1990s VCR. With few exceptions (see below), only the 7500+ and 9500+ decks should be used. NTSC has no 8x00 series.

Usually both, line TBC takes the analog frames converts them to digital and re align the lines timing and while at it apply digital noise reduction and convert the frames back to analog, If it's done separately it will be two A to D to A conversions. So if there is TBC there is DNR, however there are some low end VCR's that are built in DNR only.

I understand it's on the older side but HR-S5700AM does have B.E.S.T. (Biconditional Equalised Signal Tracking) which is a TBC, right? Thank you

You can find all the info by just googling your model's user manual.
No, BEST is not a TBC. The BEST feature checks the tape formulation and adjusts the recording or playback accordingly for best possible signal, It should be left on all the time especially when capturing, It's different from "Active Video calibration" for low end models which some suggest to better leave it off for best results.
Your model doesn't have TBC/DNR, HR-S5700AM and HR-S7600AM are the only two S-VHS models ever made to support native multi frame rates (525/625) for both playback and recording (PAL/NTSC/NTSC 4.43/PAL60/MESECAM), The difference is the HR-S7600AM has the TBC and DNR features.
Edit: PAL60 is PAL with chrominance subcarrier at 4.43 MHz. NTSC 4.43 is some sort of NTSC50 an NTSC with chrominance subcarrier at 4.43 MHz.Last edited by dellsam34; 17th Nov 2019 at 11:33.

Thanks dellsam34, what is a reasonable price to pay for a working HR-S7600AM?

Contact lordsmurf as may have one or an alternative listed on his buying guide he's willing to sell alone. He also has VCR/TBCs combos here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/marketplace/8057-sale-complete-workflow.html
His prices are probably a bit higher than you could find elsewhere, but you're guaranteed quality working items. Buying from anywhere else is hit and miss. A likely waste of time and money.Last edited by lingyi; 17th Nov 2019 at 14:59.

You won't find one, They are rarer than the unicorn, Although I have one on my work bench for a full service and will sell when done but they are pretty expensive when they are serviced properly. It took me 5 years to find one in China and 9 years later to get another one from Russia. Don't hold your breath on this model, the one you have is a decent deck it just doesn't have the line TBC and DNR if you don't mind that handicap.
