  1. bilbogod, you talked about how a good encoder(such as yourself) is able to make a divx look just as good if not beter than a svcd, cant really disagree with that since i know for a fact im not one of the good encoders. The point i was trying to make before is a simple one. It seems that there is way too difference in quality when you download divx, one time you get something it might look pretty damn good, the next, talk about a peice of shit. I suppose if you are making the vcds/svcds/divx yourself, then you should know the quality, but when it comes to downloading things, you just never know. And in that case, why bother taking the chance getting a divx that could end up looking like hell, when you could just download the svcd and be pretty damn sure your going to be happy with the quality?? All i can speak for is myself, and i know i have yet to come across a divx that i was happy with in quality.
I was just trying to tell the guy to save himself the dissapointment of downloadig something that sucks, just stick with something that is pretty much guarenteed to be good quaility, suck as svcd.
Thats my 2cents, dont rush out and buy some double bubble with it or anything.

I'm not here to bust your chops I just want to restate what I said.
DIVX is nothing more than a compression format. That is why some are good and some are bad.

    This is what you wrote:
"It seems that there is way too difference in quality when you download divx, one time you get something it might look pretty damn good, the next, talk about a peice of shit"

You can use divx to compress any form of a movie wether it be a dvd rip or some idiot with a camera in a movie theater.

I have a homemade movie made on a hi8 cam corder if I compress it in divx I can send it to you in a smaller format than the uncompressed avi. The movie is 2 hrs long and uncompressed it will be hugh like something around 4 gigs if I compress it in divx I can make it be what ever file size I want.say around 200mb.The smaller I make it the more quality it will lose.

Now having said that If the movie is taped at a cinema on a cam-corder then the quality will of course be, bad but if the divx. is made from a dvd ( screener)then the quality will be excellent. EVERY MOVIE ON P2P IS A DIVX.

try reading the FAQ page on www.divx.com
    You may understand it better.

  3. well i decided to give it a try, see if its true or not. This is the divx i got as a sample to see qaultiy: Black_Hawk_Down_SCREENER_DVDrip_DiVX-JAR. It wasnt bad, but still isnt as good as the svcd that i already have. One point that really hasnt come up yet, it depends on what you plan on doing with your downloads. If you are planning on watching them on your computer, then perhaps divx is the way for you to go. But if you are planning on watching them on a standalone dvd player, why waste your time. I know for myself it took way too long to convert any avi files to vcd format in order to burn them to watch on my dvd. The way i see it, a movie now takes me a couple of hours to download the entire thing in a good quality format, and as soon as the download is complete, im able to burn and watch without all the screwing around you have to do if you were to have picked up a divx instead.
I know im happy with the quality im getting, most of the svcds i have would compare without a problem to the acutal dvd, how much better can you get??

The quality all goes by how it was ripped in terms of bitrate. SVCD is Better than vcd without a doubt . When ripping a movie there can be human error as well as some other variables.

If the movie you just downloaded is a avi file compressed in divx and is 3 cd's this would be svcd. the quality will be better than with 2 cds(this is vcd). If I take a avi and download it then convert it to mpeg2(SVCD) then the mpeg isn't better than the avi

Are you downloading your movies in three parts? or
Are you downloading and splitting them up into three parts?
If you are converting them yourself then look at the file info in virtual dub and it will say divx, Guarenteed 100%

I think you need to read the www.divx.com faq page
and also how to rip a dvd page on this site.

How do you think it is posssible for people to have multiple movies on a 20 gig hard drive when each dvd movie is around 4.7 gig.Its called compression and this is what DivX is. just as mp3 are for music, Divx is for movies.I currently have 13 movies on approximately 24 gigs of my 40 gig hard drive.

    Hope your understanding

well, technically, SVCD and VCD are compressions of the vob files, which are prolly compressions of the original source

divx may be needed for the slow transfers on p2p...but, SVCDs are the way to go if you want quality (obviously, crap in ... crap out)...there's no point to download 5 gigs of camcorder quality shit when you can watch the heads of the ppl in the theater and baby crying and talking compressed even further to like 1 gig

but for dvd screeners, if it's crap out, then it was compressed badly cuz it certainly wasn't crap in....as mrpink pointed out, compressing into divx is really hard to master (most of the time..especially on p2p...it's done horribly wrong)....with SVCDs, there's less of a chance for screwups and also 3 disc SVCDs have much more filesize in its favor than 2 disc divx (and like i metioned earlier...mode 2 burning allows 100 MB more SVCD per disc than divx burned in data mode)

as for fitting as much as possible on the hdd, i hafta agree with you, vcd4me..and as far as compression goes divx is prolly one of the best..if not the best (other mpeg 4 compressions just plain suck...asf, navi, etc.)

  6. Poopyhead are you saying that when you download a movie off of irc you are downloading these huge files.and they are not compressed in divx format. .

well....dunno about other people..but i bought a standalone dvd player cuz i wanted to watch the movies on my TV w/o having to go through the TV-OUT on my vid card....divx obviously can't do that..and coverting divx to mpg will actually decrease quality..so that's not a good idea....

and about your question..the few theater releases i do download are "uncompressed" VCD (easily 1+ gig)...usually zip files (each zip file containing a set of .rars, then unrar into bin/cue, then burn w/ fireburner into VCD) however, any good and popular channel on IRC will have .edu and other T3+ servers...i've dled files off of IRC at 150+ KB/s

personally for me, the (S)VCD format of theater releases is so i can watch it in my dvd player..not really for the quality..cuz i'm sure good divx will match the quality of SVCD

  8. Wow
I never new that about irc just another confusing thing to learn about irc.

Yea I wish I had enough money to buy a standalone dvd player. I just bought a Terapin and the quality is ok but I think my next purchase is going to be either a portable dvd player/with screen like the apex PD-50 5.8inch screen and only $250., or a standalone dvd recorder.Big difrence in price for my next toy.

    Thanks for the info
