When attempting to extract and save a wav file from an avi file to use to make an mpeg, the NEW wav file is distorted with sound chunks and repeated sounds popping in the good audio every so often. Please help me to correct this.
I am using VirtualDub, but have also tried AVI2WAV and experienced the same problem.

Check out Doom9.org and follow the guide for Besweet. It could be the sound on the avi is ac3
I have to use VirtualDub to extract the sound, Direct Stream then rename the sound file to .ac3 then use besweet to convert to wav.
