Hi, I need some assistance as I've never done this before.

    I have:
    • Dell Latitude E6500 Laptop
    • Insignia NS-32D511NA15 HD TV
    • VIZIO E32-C1 Smart TV
The laptop has a DisplayPort (I tested this port with my computer monitor and it's working) and an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M built in video graphics.

According to the manual, HDMI suggested resolutions for the Insignia TV are: 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i

The VIZIO manual just says 1080P for the resolution

    My question is:
    1. Can I use a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to connect the laptop to the TV, and if so, which TV should I use or is it ok to use either TV?
    2. Is there any specific type of cable I should get for this connection? Note that I don't need the audio, just the video, I will be sending audio through the audio output somewhere else.
    3. Will the TV screen look correct, i.e. nothing distorted, stretched or weird..?

    Thank you for your help!

    Either.

    Any adapter and/or cable.

It will look fine. You might want to turn off the TV's overscan feature so you can see the picture all the way to the edges.

I think a Displayport to HDMI active adapter is required, not just a simple cable unless the connection is DP++ rather than regular DP. Here is one example: https://www.amazon.com/Sienoc-Displayport-Female-Adapter-Converter/dp/B00ENH915G/ Based on the age of the laptop, you are more likely to have DP 1.1 than DP 1.2.

[Edit]On second thought, the description says it works with DP, DP++, or DisplayPort++, so I could be wrong. Maybe it contains some electronics.

So all I need is that adapter, and then plug a regular hdmi cable into the female part of the adapter?

That is exactly what I did with my DP 1.2a to HDMI 2.0 adapter. However, see my edited post. The cable you bought might be OK

Is there a way to tell what kind of displayport is on the laptop?

Next to the port on the laptop, it has the DisplayPort dual-mode (DP++) logo
So I think this means the cable I ordered will work

I based my guess on DP version on the age of your laptop. DP 1.1 came out before your laptop was released. DP 1.2 came out in 2010, the same year your laptop was released.

DP++ is also called "DisplayPort dual-mode". Wikipedia says this: "Officially, the "DP++" logo should be used to indicate a DP port that supports dual-mode, but most modern devices do not use the logo." However, Wikipedia also says VESA released the Dual-Mode 1.1 standard in 2013, so your 2010 laptop may be too old have DP++.

Ah, you posted the answer while I was typing. You are OK then.

Ok, I'll take a chance, hopefully it should work, thanks for bringing it to my attention though!

  13. Displayport to HDMI definitely works. That's how I connect my Lenovo T430 to my Samsung TV.

    However ...

The Displayport connector on the item you linked to is a full-sized connector. I doubt very much that your laptop has that large connector. Instead, you want a mini-displayport to HDMI.

No, it is definitely the regular size as I tested it today with the cable that I use on my other monitor, just to make sure that the port was in fact working.
