I've got a holiday mp4 video which plays ok in VLC Media player but nowhere else. If I open it in WMP it plays audio only but not video. If I try and open in AVS Video Converter it says "Contains no video data" and if I try with Mercalli, to stabilise the video, I get "Unsupported Video Format". What is going on?

    Any advice gratefull received.

The issue is that your programs that can't open or play it cause it's hevc encoded and they aren't up to date to use it.

Is there anything I can do about it? Strange that only VLC wil play it. Can't I somehow convert to anothet file type?

  6. VLC contains it's own decoders, separate and independent from the system installed decoders. So this makes sense

If you install LAV filters, it has HEVC decoder

  7. LAV filters will allow you to play it with other players. HandBrake will be able to convert it x264

    Excellent. I've already got Handbrake.

  10. And check whether your camera has an option to encode as AVC rather than HEVC. It would save your the extra re-encoding step.

Thanks I will check. In fact I think I may already have done that since the original video was filmed in 2018.
