How Can I Fix A Python Error on Totally New Win10 Install of Youtube-dl?

I just made a completely new win10 install and youtube-dl will not run.

I get this errror.

I tried installing Python - latest version. No good.
Then I tried installing an old one following a googled hint, 2.7, hasn't worked.


PS C:\Windows\system32> youtube-dl
Fatal Python error: Py_Initialize: unable to load the file system codec
ImportError: No module named 'encodings'

Try right clicking youtube-dl and "Run as Administrator"

Must be a Python forum somewhere out there. That's the first thing I would look into. Or maybe the youtube-dl author will respond.

Hi ,

Create a directory , without Administrator's rights .
Ex : D:\YTBE
Find the lastest version of youtube-dl , unzip it in the previous directory .
Don't forget on updating youtube-dl .

AFAIK youtube-dl.exe is meant to be called from the "normal" command prompt (i.e., from cmd.exe).

Not from a PowerShell console [which I have never used and is so complicated that it remains useless to me].

Example of batch file , name it "Zorba.bat" put it in the "youtube-dl.exe"'s directory

@echo off
youtube-dl -f best "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxdHMHuTxUQ" -o Zorba.mp4
pause
