  1. Almost all videos I re-encode are coming out near perfect except the latest videos from one source. It appears to be similar to a lot of issues I have read about but I can't resolve this particular problem no matter what I try. MediaInfo reports the source like:

    Codec ID : isom (isom/iso2/avc1/mp41)
    Writing application : Voukoder R2
    Color space : YUV
    Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
    Bit depth : 8 bits
    Writing library : x264 core 157
    Color range : Full
    Color primaries : BT.709
    Transfer characteristics : BT.709
    Matrix coefficients : BT.709

When I encode in Handbrake, I get the result shown in the attached screen shots. This doesn't seem to be a color matrix problem because the source, if it is reporting accurately, is BT.709 same as the output video. If I try a different color matrix then I get a slight color shift, but still the contrast (maybe?) is way off. I did an encode in TMPGEnc Video Master Works and had the same result. I also tried encoding it in x264 10bit and x265 and had the same result.

I assumed the problem was related to the color range = full, but setting full range color in handbrake reflects in the MediaInfo properties, but the the result is the same as limited color range.

    Please help

You have a Full range source. When encoding it in Handbrake as Full range you then get another full range video. But you aren't decoding it properly as just about every mediaplayer expects Limited Range (TV Levels). So when a Mediaplayer plays your Full Range source as Limited (TV Range), you can get clipping.

I'm going to say whoever in Adobe PP with Voukoder R2 outputted Full Range video messed up or this was never meant for public circulation.

Sounds like handbrake doesn't do any actual YUV->RGB->YUV conversions but simply sets flags.

  3. So how can I convert this video using x264, ffmpeg or anything else? I Just tried re-encoding with Adobe Premiere and same result. Please help

    Thanks

If you can work with FFMPEG you might try https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/381911-ffmpeg-scaling-video-resolution#post2472148
    .
    Code:
    in_range=pc:out_range=tv

  5. I did a simple command line conversion with ffmpeg and it automatically picked up the full range color and made a good copy. This is strange since handbrake uses ffmpeg and it doesn't work, even with the newest version of handbrake. It isn't really a problem if the converted file is still full range, I use a PC for everything. Now I am going to have to compile ffmpeg so that I can get the fdk aac codec.

No, it uses libav which ffmpeg might use libav too, but it doesn't use ffmpeg.

  7. Some times ago i used this: in Handbrake (field Extra Options) add "fullrange=on".

  8. For that kind of content you should use XXX264. *wink*
Also (although I generally don't like the answers relating to the whys instead of the hows of a given question), why would you want to re-encode a video which is most likely already in a highly compressed delivery format ? (In this case the original already has banding issues, from there on it can only get worse with a reduced bitrate. If quality doesn't matter at all and only size matters – perhaps switch to ASCII-p0rn ?)

As a side note, Alisa has a very pretty blue dress. Must be a nod to Monica Lewinsky or something.
    - You ruined my dress.
    - Save it. Like Monica Lewinsky. Show your friends how hard you made me come.

  9. I can generally compress a video to 4000-6000k with minimal loss. Originals can be 8000-10000k sometimes greater. That almost cuts storage in half. I horde videos, I can't bring myself to delete anything mildly interesting.

  10. Oh, well... Did you ask Alisa if she didn't mind being savagely re-compressed ?
(I would guess that she got highly compressed that day once she quit her dress.)

And isn't she a tad up upset of being described as “mildly interesting” ?

Good catch, I didn't even realize what kind of "movie" it is. LOL.
