The first chapter of this Blu-ray plays an Overture with a blank screen. Before ripping it to the hard drive and changing some menu elements, the Overture was a separate mpls file that you could not access with a standalone player. I fixed that, but the blank screen for that first 2:27 is really boring. I muxed together a "title card" of sorts to replace it, but I have NO IDEA how to actually do it.

Can someone help? I'm always willing to try and learn.

    Thanks for reading!

If it were me, I would (and have been) using HandBrake (free) to covert the entire movie to a MKV file (with a Variable Framerate and other settings to make it smaller without losing quality, at least not noticeably). From there, it becomes an easier single video file editing venture. For that, I purchased and like VideoReDo, which has basic features to split & join movie pieces, and put up a Title. There might be free options to do similar that I'm not aware of.

Of course, this will all end up with a MKV file that can be played on a screen. I don't attempt to convert it back to a Blu-Ray structure, but I suppose that authoring one from such a file is possible with the right software.

One of the more advanced features of VRD I've used that may help here is to break the file into Elementary Streams (1 file for the video and 1 for each audio track) that can be joined back together if you only want to affect one or the other. My main use of this, with little kids in the house, is to use Audacity (free) to mute out curse words in movies I still want them to see (like the MCU), and then (like a jacket zipper) join video & audio again to create a kid-friendly version of the flick (e.g., Guardians 2 and Thor-Ragnorok really needed this treatment). One of the nice things about this in 5.1 audio is that, unless the speaker is in an echo-y place, you silence voice track pieces, but the music & sound effects stay untouched, and the kids don't even notice. Now, in your case, you may want to do something of the converse: try and edit the video only (with what I'm not 100% sure) and leave the audio stream intact.

But if you're intent on editing Blu-Ray files and keeping the rest of the BR structure intact directly, sorry, I can't help you with that approach.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I would want to put the BD back together with the menus. I would definitely want to keep the 5.1 audio. I only need to replace the black screen with either a JPG or a small MKV I assembled of the JPG with the 2:27 long music track, which has FLAC audio, but I would rather use the 5.1 so I would toggle the audio track off. As far as converting to MKV, I could do that but I would want to maintain the highest quality for the entire file. Dumbing it down in any way to bring down the size is not an option, lol.

I found an old VideoHelp post mentioning Defsoft's BDFix (latest version is 1.82) which allows replacing video tracks. There is a free version with a smaller feature set. However, I have never used any version of the software and don't know how well it works for its intended purpose.

An mpls file is a Blu-ray playlist. The actual Blu-ray video and other Blu-ray streams are always in .m2ts files. You can't simply pop in a JPG or an MKV as a replacement for an m2ts. You will need to encode the video that you want to use as a replacement to match the video characteristics for the playlist's other m2ts files but I can't help you with that. I've only done a little simple Blu-ray authoring, not cut-and-paste jobs to replace elements inside an existing disc structure.

Part of why I think this might be able to be done is the fact that the Overture is it's own playlist file (00003.mpls). There was an authoring error that doesn't allow you to access the Overture in any way on a standalone player. It always starts at the beginning of the film proper (00100.mpls). When I ripped it to my hard drive, I simply removed the original 00100.mpls file and renamed 00003.mpls to 00100.mpls. Voila. The movie starts with the Overture now and I made changes to the menu to reflect that. I deleted the 00003.mpls file, but I can always rip the disc again if I need it for any surgery I might have to perform. I did nothing to the Java or anything like that. I can't help but think that this can be done. I just don't know where to start. I know it sounds like a PITA, but I think it is worth it in the end.

BDInfo should be able to open 00100.mpls (the renamed 00003.mpls) and find the .m2ts file containing the overture as well as all the other m2ts files that play after that one. If the whole movie plays via 00100.mpls (the renamed 00003.mpls), there are other files included in the playlist, either directly or indirectly through a link to another playlist.

You need to replace the current m2ts file containing the overture with a new m2ts file containing the overture and the video that you want to display while the overture plays. To produce a Blu-ray-compliant m2ts file from a non-compliant source like an mkv, you need a Blu-ray authoring app that also converts non-compliant video to Blu-ray standards. You will need to make sure that the frame rate, resolution, and other characteristics of the new m2ts match those for the other m2ts files in the playlist.

Makes sense. Sounds legit. I have tsMuxer, MKVToolNix, and VSO Blu-ray Converter Ultimate. Do you think any combination of these programs would do the trick?

I guess I'm going to need to rip the original disc again so I can get to the 00003.mpls file. I KNEW I should have set it aside instead of ditching it.

Not really. tsMuxeR does basic Blu-ray authoring and m2ts muxing but doesn't convert video to be Blu-ray compliant as far as I can recall.

MKVToolNix is a set of tools to create, alter, split, join, demultiplex and inspect Matroska (MKV) files. You could use it to separate the MKV into elementary video and audio streams to obtain just the video but it doesn't convert anything to be Blu-ray compliant as far as I can tell.

VSO Blu-ray Converter Ultimate converts from Blu-ray to other formats, not from other formats to Blu-ray.

I think you need something like Cyberlink PowerDirector or TMPGEnc Authoring Works to convert video to be Blu-ray compliant and author to create an m2ts file from your overture's audio and the video that you want to play along with it. If I remember correctly, they can trim/edit as well. Both have free trials.

You removed the original 00100.mpls file. I don't know if the original 00100.mpls file will be needed. If you only renamed 00003.mpls to 00100.mpls then you still have 00003.mpls.

Oh dear. Yeah you're right of course. Please forgive my noobness. Perhaps this idea is but a pipe dream. I don't want to give up just yet, so I welcome any continued suggestions. Please keep in mind that I basically have NO idea what I'm doing in this regard, so any instructions at grade school level are welcome.

If you want more help you need to give more feedback. I gave you some suggestions. Have you tried using BDInfo to find the m2ts containing the overture? Did you find it? Have you used MKVToolnix to demultiplex the MKV to get the video that you want to play along with the original overture audio from your Blu-ray disc?

Okay, my apologies. With BDInfo, I opened it, loaded the Blu-ray, and beyond that, I have NO idea what to do. I can't recall another program that has so many buttons and selections! I simply have no idea what to do with it. I am having medical issues and I have to go back to the hospital soon, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to pick it back up. Usually, I can "feel" my way around a program to figure out what I need to do, but both BDInfo and MKVToolnix are over my head. I am trying to do what I can with the suggestions offered, but my being a noob in massive amounts of pain isn't helping.

BDInfo - Click the "Browse" button and select your Blu-ray's BDMV folder because, as you know, that is where the playlists and .m2ts files are stored. BDInfo will scan all the playlists and list them in the top section of the BDInfo window, along with the length and size of the video for the playlist. The longest and largest playlists contain different versions of the same movie and maybe extras. However, you already know which playlist to examine, 00100.mpls (the renamed 00003.mpls). Tick the box next to 00100.mpls and click the "View Report" button. If the overture is the first thing that plays, it should be in the first m2ts file listed in the report.

There's no "Browse" button, but there is a "Read" button. No playlists appear in the window anywhere.

**EDIT** I see the Browse button. Still though, don't know what to do after that.

You are running the wrong program. I suggested that you use BDInfo to find the m2ts file containing the Overture.

I downloaded the free version of Defsoft's BDFix and played with it. I've come to the conclusion that unless you are willing to part with an unreasonable amount of money, you will have to do without video accompanying the overture if you want to keep the original Blu-ray menus and chapters.

My idea of editing the original main video track to add video for the overture and then using Defsoft's BDFix to replace the original main video track with the edited version won't work. It appears that video track replacement is disabled in the free version of Defsoft's BDFix. The Pro version which allows replacing the main video track (assuming that it works as advertised) is prohibitively expensive at $399.

Ouch. I had also wanted to bring up the 5.1 mix volume because it is annoyingly quiet, but apparently this thing is stacking up against me. I guess it's time to just accept what I was able to change and leave it at that. I appreciate everyone's feedback.
