  1. I ripped it to an ISO with ImgBurn some time back. Trying to rip the ISO fails:
    Code:
    Using direct disc access mode
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #1 does not match one in IFO header.
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #2 does not match one in IFO header.
Calculated BUP offset for VTS #3 does not match one in IFO header.
    Failed to open disc
    Using the disc almost works:
    Code:
    Using direct disc access mode
    Using LibreDrive mode (v05 id=067EFCA8EA7E)
IFO file for VTS #2 is corrupt, VOB file must be scanned. This may take very long time, please be patient.
IFO file for VTS #3 is corrupt, VOB file must be scanned. This may take very long time, please be patient.
    Open DVD manually : "1"
Cells 2-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Cells 43-end were skipped due to cell commands (structure protection?)
Complex multiplex encountered - 7 cells and 10296 VOBUs have to be scanned. This may take some time, please be patient - it can't be avoided.
    Title #1/0/1 was added (7 cell(s), 2:44:38)
    Operation successfully completed
Only issue is it's about five minutes short. I had another disc behaving the same way, but only when opening automatically. Opening manually got me that last five minutes and allowed me to rip the full disc.

Why is this happening? Are there any workarounds?

You ripped a commercial DVD with Imgburn or MakeMKV ?
Imgburn does not have any capability to deal with the copy protections.

  3. Which means it either isn't a commercial DVD or I circumvented copy protection some other way while using ImgBurn. Either way, it doesn't affect the issue I'm having with MakeMKV.

  4. or your ripping workflow was wrong.. the fact there was an error.. it meant disk didnt transfer right..
prob decryptor having protection with that disk...
rip again with updated version of decryptor

  5. I have the latest MakeMKV and it's not working now. Other discs I ripped the same way back then work fine.

I opened it manually and specified to only open the first chapter, which is the bit that's missing. Got a bunch of L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR messages. So, fun. Found another copy of the same disc, and it too will only rip chapter two onwards. But manually specifying the first chapter does enable me to rip it this time.

So now I have an MKV file with the first chapter, and an MKV file with chapter two onwards, and MKVtoolnix. Problem solved, right?

Well, no. Muxing them together generates a warning that:
    Code:
The track number 0 from the file 'M:\Backups\Temp\2.mkv' can probably not be appended correctly to the track number 0 from the file 'M:\Backups\Temp\1.mkv': The codec's private data does not match (lengths: 34 and 92).
The resulting MKV has no visible video, it's just black.

What do I need to do to the chapter one file to make it match the rest? Seems better to screw with that one and leave the other one alone if I can, rather than re-encoding the whole shebang.

use another program such as dvdfab to copy the disc.
the disc may have some newer copy protection scheme that MakeMKV can't handle.

Get hold of an old program DVDShrink aand first set it up not to shrink and save it to you hdd. Then run MakeMKV using "Open DVD files Manually" . See if that gets around the problem. If the DVD is 10 years old DVDShrink should be able to do it. Alternatively you can setup DVDShrink to output an ISO file. The important thing is to not allow it to shrink so file size in = file size out.

  10. The DVDShrink version results in the same missing five minutes.

I've got the five minutes ripped, and I've got the rest ripped, I'd just be happy if I could combine them TBH.

  11. The first chapter appears to be interlaced, the rest, not. I've seen it before that the opening credits of a disc are interlaced and the rest of the movie isn't. That's probably why they aren't being combined? Is the 5 minutes you ripped viewable otherwise? Perhaps the DVD was incorrectly mastered.

  12. They both appear interlaced on playback.

It's literally just one chapter of a title. It's not a separate title or anything like that, and it's not separate in any way. It's a WWE event, the chapter point occurs just after the start of the first entrance for the opening match.

  13. In any event, what do I need to do to chapter one to make it mux with the rest?

Can you provide 15 seconds or so of both pieces cut from the source? You may get more suggestions
    when they've been reviewed

I would make a new MKV removing (untick) everything except the video for both then try appending Chapter 2 to Chapter 1. If this works then extract the sound from both original and append to each other using an Audio editor like Adobe Audition or Audacity and then add to the new video only MKV. I would create from scratch new chapter markers and not bother with the original.

  16. I tried muxing only the video. It doesn't work. Audio-only appends just fine.

How would I provide 15-second samples?

Doesn't have to be exactly 15 seconds, minimum of 15. Here I'm using mkvtoolnix to create a clip of approx.
30 seconds, using the start and end timestamps

  18. The first-chapter file has no video when I do that, it's just a black screen. There are thumbnails in Windows Explorer though. And the original file itself does work. So whatever the issue is it's clearly with that file.

Then post the whole of the first chapter. Is it actually a commercial disk? Mediainfo says it was encoded by TmpgEnc 2.5
    which seems odd

  20. Oddly when I play that segment in PowerDVD it works fine. Just a black screen in VLC though. I can't upload the full chapter, it keeps timing out.

And yeah, it's a commercial disc. Silver Vision's WWE Tagged Classics release of the 1998 Royal Rumble.
