First, I would like to say that this website is a godsend for a newbie like me.
Here is my problem and i hope you guys can help. I am using TMPGEnc to convert avi files to vcd. I have about a dozen or so movies on my hard drive that I would like to watch on my dvd player. I use 80 minute cd media and all of the movies I have are over 80 minutes. My first successful attempt was the south park movie. This movie was around 84 minutes long. I used TMPGEnc to convert it. I set the source range to cut off the beginning and ending credits leaving the movie under 80 minutes long. I converted it to vcd and burned it to a cd with nero and it works perfectly. The next movie I am trying is shrek. This movie is about 87 minutes long. Removing the credits does not shorten it enough. It is still too long. I tried a method from this site for fitting a movie thats longer then 80 minutes on to an 80 minute cd by changing the sound and audio quality. The result was poor.
So what I decided to do was to use TMPGEnc to encode the first hour of the movie to one vcd and then encode the rest to another cd. The two files that I end up with do not have any sound. So my question to you guys is "why is it that when I chop off the ends of a movie using TMPGEnc it works fine but when I chop a movie in half I do not get any sound on either half?"
P.S. I was able to turn shrek.avi into two vcds by splitting it with AVIChop and then encoding each file with TMPGEnc to vcd and then burning onto a cd with nero.

Hey did you use virtual dub at all you never stated if you did
We were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked? -
Well, I hope I don't sound too dumb here but I don't know what virtual dub is. It sounds familiar. Is it a setting in TMPGEnc? If it is I do not believe I set it. If thats the case then that may be my problem.

I see a lot of people using just tmpegenc to convert, and they have audio problems.
virtual dub is for extracting the sound (wav) from a avi file
If you are going to use two cd-rs for shrek take the the origianl shrek avi (don't cut anything-yet).and use virtual dub to extract the sound from the avi.
Then you use tmpgenc- It sounds like you know how to cut it .I recomend that you cut it into half just like the guide says.so you can get up and change the disc in the middle of the movie so your not doing near the end where the good part of a movie usually is.
Here is the guide I use(the way I just described it to you)

Hope this helps VCD4ME
P.S. let me know how you make outWe were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked? -
Frst I would obtain some 99 minutes CD's. CompUSA sells them. Ther skew # 47669 17059. they are not expensive.
To cut movies, I use MPEGtool. Its freeware and does a great, fast job on VCD's -
sorry, i forgot. when using the 99 minutes CD's with nero, select the"overburn" option under preferrences and change the time to 99

Thanks for your help guys. I really appreciate it. I used VirtualDub and my movies are coming out perfectly. I do plan on getting my hands on some 99 minute cds soon. I havent been able to verify if my cd rewriter supports overburning yet. But for now I dont mind having to change the disk in the middle of the movie.

Jothhand Excellent I'm happy it 's wrking out for you
But check into the 99 min cd-rs some cd writers can't use them.
Mine doesn't do a search (type in 90min cdr) on this site to find the link to the cdr info site it may even be called cdrinfo I'm not sure.
I think there are some other issues with them as well.
GOOD LUCK VCD4MEWe were all NEWBIES once and the only stupid question is the one that's not asked?
