    Is there a loss of quality when going from .dat back to MPEG? Or am I stuck with having to create another avi and re-encode (I have the original source)?

    Quality should be the same. I believe the dat file is the same mpg + some extra error checking code. I've not noticed any difference in quality with vcdgear or isobuster.
