how to add chapters when encoding

Hi guys, i would like to know how to add chapters when encoding a movie. I use Megui to encode from 1080p resolution movies to smaller resolutions, my source file/movie has chapters and i want to include them in my encoded file. I tried chapter creator in megui and added the chapters from source, but when encoding finished i checked it and there are no chapters in my encoded file. Can someone help how to add them properly in megui or another program.

What container are you encoding in to ?

mp4 does not support chapters but I believe that mkv does.

Both mp4 and mkv support chapters. With MKVToolNix GUI's Chapter editor you can easily add chapters to mkv files (e.g. created by MeGUI).

yes, its MKV

Thanks guys i figured it out, i created the chapters file with megui from the source file and then i muxed it into my encoded file with MKVtoolnix.
