Is it possible? Just to flag the container as 4:3 for playback without rendering the video?

  2. Short answer: No.

Long answer: The ODML2 extension added support for aspect ratio. But I'm not aware of any program that sets them. And there's probably no player that reads them.

  3. I play lossless AVIs as 4:3 using MPC-HC. Right-click the video and go Video Frame->Aspect Ratio->4:3. Is something like that good enough? I believe most software players can do that.
