I have a Samsung 5 series tv, that is about 7 years old. I do play series on the tv, that I have downloaded, sometimes the audio is not working, but I know how to fix it with Avidemux, but now a few of the series thst I download have a video problm tht cannot play on my tv, how and what video format must I use.
Did try to convert from mkv to mp4. but it is not working.

Are you sure it isn't a profile or reference frame problem on your tv rather than hevc? I had a Philips TV once which struggled to play h264 files with more than 2 ref frames causing picture pixellation and audio out of synch. Maybe you can flash/ update your TV with newer firmware. Recoding files just causes video quality loss. If it is a profile/level issue try changing the level first. Might work. If it is just a mkv container issue then change the container to mp4 with Rebox.
In a different thread a user complained about his Samsung UE40EH5000W (2012) suddenly having troubles with certain files. We found out files created by x264 r2945 and older are fine, files created by r2969 or later don't work (unless interlaced + b-frames). This seems to be a Samsung bug. If you use MediaInfo as suggested by jagabo you will often see what x264 version was used.
