  1. I know that it's an old thread but still.
I am pretty sure that stuttering and sound desynchronization, on a standalone player, after splitting a movie without reencoding pertains to bitrate, or rather to max bitrate.

Here are a couple of examples

I recently split and burned on a couple bd-r M:I 7 - Dead reckoning part 1, and everything's great, because movie is two and a half hours long, so there are no great spikes in bitrate

but when I try to do the same with new dysney movie Wish, for example, or The ring 2002, the result is stuttering and intermittent sound, and when we look at bdInfo we see max spikes over 100mbps

So here's the question: Is it possible to cap these max spikes, without damaging the quality to much, preferably so that average bitrare would stay pretty much the same?

  2. You cannot just take a 4K encode and slap it on a BD50. TOTAL bitrate on BD50 is limited to 64 Mbps or eventually 81.7 Mbps if you are "lucky", while BD66 and BD100 can go up to 109 Mbps and even 127.9 Mbps.

There's just no feasible solution to your problem. It is like trying to take a BD25/50 movie to a set of AVCHD BD5/9 discs: it will never work, period. Your only way out is to re-encode it to the BD50 bitrate, using the same VBV parameters but encode with HEVC.

I don't even understand why you would want to split a 4K disc you own into numerous burned BD50. Sounds more like piracy.

  3. So why are there such programs as dvdfab, and many others if it's piracy?

Abandon discs - too many variables and problems. I simply transfer my DVD,BD and UHD discs to my NAS and play them via my Zidoo media player or using PLEX I can access them anywhere.

We're talking about producing duplicate copies of commercial discs. Not playing them back or something else alike. Anyway DVDFab or not, your bitrate problem is intractable with BD50.

  6. If its so intractable than why some discs, as I said M:i 7 for example оr LOTR Fellowship and probably other two are perfectly playable on bd-r on a standalone blu ray player? So it's not structure and it's not burning process or whatever, it's definitely the bitrate problem, and it's definitely solvable, I just need a little help to figure it out, how remove high bitrate jumps while keeping average close to the original, maybe constant bitrate is the answer?

  7. It all comes down to the bitrate of the encode on the [BD66, BD100] disc. Some have a sufficiently low one that it may work on a BD50, others won't.

CBR sucks, don't use it for physical media. You must re-encode the footage, there's no other way.

  8. I know, the question is in what program and what codec, I mean is handbrake really the best choice? Maybe dvdfab would be better or something else like fastflix or shutter or whatever?

  9. If it's your own video, encode to webm. There is no legitimate consumer program to do 4k disc.

  11. Most likely you guys have issues with the layer break at 25GB with 50GB discs. Verbatims 50GB are not good any more, Riteks still work if you burn with Imgburn and spare areas.

I absolutely agree, but we are talking about burning back to disc, which is a low quality process with a low lifespan yield, unlike pressed discs.

Most programs are just user interfaces over x264 or x265. Just use one that lets you set the proper options in the encoding windows. Handbrake lets you specify additional parameters for x264 and x265 like vbv-bufsize and vbv-maxrate, which are mandatory for BD video encoding. You are always better served with direct command line anyway.

  13. yes, thanks, but what parameters should I choose for bufsize if I don't want maxrate to spike above say 60-65 mbps?

  14. Stick to AVC recommended values, even for HEVC: vbv-maxrate=40000,vbv-bufsize=30000. For the rest of the parameters, it will depend of your target codec. AVC has excellent documentation for BD, HEVC does not, so you may have to ask on doom9.
