  1. I have tried a few times now to convert my AVI to MPG for VCD play. Each time it freezes up around 90%.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, and still haven't a clue. I am using version 12a. I know there are newer versions, but none of them recognize my AVIs.

If I can't get this to work, can someone else give me a suggestion and/or a recommendation for another encoder?

    Thanks!

You seem to have a bad frame in your AVI. Solution 1 is that you cut it out or if possible run it through a correcting program first. If you check through the forum under "TMPGEnc freeze" I'm sure you'll find a few solutions.

Some people have reported the Panasonic MPEG Encoder encoding things that TMPGEnc wouldn't (just for info).

  3. Thanks a ton Aldus. I ran a fix on the file and it works fine. Also, as promised I am getting back to you regarding my VCD creation.

I succesfully created 2 VCDs last night. The only weird thing was, was that TMPG would SEEM like it would freeze, but in actuality, it was completed.

It was the oddest thing. It froze at around 80%. I had to ctrl-alt-del and kill the app, but when I checked the MPEG it was fine. Totally creepy!

But, I think it's a step in the right direction. This scene would be SO much easier, if it wasn't for the time consuming part of encoding. Trial and error could take weeks. It took about 6 hours to encode one disk/file. I think I should stick to DC and Game backing up..

lol.. Thanks again for all of your help from yesterday!

Glad to hear things went successful - well more or less.

As for trial and error, you should always do 1-5min test files - that way you won't spend hours or days trying to find your perfect picture with different settings.

As PC prices are constantly coming down (i.e. anything under 1GHz) you should consider using 1 "old" PC in future just for encoding - that way it doesn't disturb you, and it can work fine on its own.

  5. Thanks for the advice. I didn't know you could stop TMPG prematurly. Do you simply just "stop" the encoding? And then play it back to see how it looks? It makes sense.

And you are right about the second PC thing. Right now I'm running a Celery 433 w/ 320 MB ram. When I get my next PC (c'mon bonus time), I will make my Celery my encoder.. lol

    Thanks again.

Yes, I always stop my encoders after a few frames (about 1500 = 60secs in PAL) to see what I am actually producing - much better that way <grin>

There is no such thing as a TMPGEnc forum - TMPGEnc have a small BBS at http://www.tmpgenc.com/cgi-bin/ebbs/board.cgi?board=tmpgenc

I'm sure if you have a problem with TMPGEnc you'll be able to get or find the answer here on this site, using the "search" facility.
