  1. Hi guys,

I'm trying to understand why a video file is not working on my tv integrated player (via usb).
So I compared two files (one of them is working and the other doesn't) with mediainfo and they're exactly the same except for the version of x264core used to do the encode.

Do you have any info to help?
I'm a total noob regarding this topic.
Also, these files are tv shows so I don't know if it's ok to post the filenames.

  2. So all the x264 settings in the Encoding Settings were the same? For example:

    Code:
    Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=5 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x3:0x113 / me=hex / subme=8 / psy=1 / fade_compensate=0.00 / psy_rd=1.00:0.00 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=6 / lookahead_threads=1 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=0 / stitchable=1 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=2 / b_adapt=1 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / weightb=1 / open_gop=0 / weightp=2 / keyint=50 / keyint_min=5 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=50 / rc=crf / mbtree=1 / crf=18.0000 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=0 / qpmax=69 / qpstep=4 / vbv_maxrate=30000 / vbv_bufsize=30000 / crf_max=0.0 / nal_hrd=none / filler=0 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00

  3. Yes, they were the same even those weird settings you just showed.
I forgot that it was possible to post code so here it is :

  4. Yes, they look identical aside from insignificant bitrate and running time differences.

Older versions of MediaInfo don't show one MKV feature that caused problems with many playback devices: header compression. If your version is more than a few years old update it.

There are other muxer settings that don't show up in MediaInfo. Have you tried remuxing the files with MkvToonix to see if the new files play properly?

What exactly do you mean when you say "one of them is working and the other doesn't"? What happens with the one that doesn't work? Does it show up in the browser? Can you select it? Does it start playing and choke after a while? Is there any kind of error message?

  5. I'm using the latest version of MediaInfo.
How can I know the header compression of the files? I tried googling but I did not find anything about it.
The file appears in the browser but when I launch it, I get an error message : "The video data is not supported."

edit : Also, my TV is a Samsung UE40EH5000W

It shows up in the audio section of MediaInfo. I forget the exact term used. Header compression was made the default In MKVToolNix a few years ago. But it caused problems for so many people it was turned off.

    No clues there!

Could always do a quick conversion to mp4 with mkvtomp4 and see if that works

  8. Did you verify if it plays ok in a software media player on your computer ? e.g. vlc, mpchc, potplayer...
    Quote Quote
  9. davexnet, I'm sure that it will work if I convert the file but that's not the point. I'm asking out of curiosity.
poisondeathray, the file is ok and plays fine.

  10. I have also an older Samsung tv around here, it is a ES7090 from 2012, upload files to google drive or whatever and send link as pm so I can test it here to verify.

  11. I've sent you the links.

  12. I was sleeping, since I live in bavaria. OK, I tried the files in the old TV and both files play fine. Try to format a USB device new and copy the files on it, maybe a corrupt device or filesystem.

  13. My external hard drive is working fine but still, I tried with a usb stick and same problem.
I checked your TV and indeed, it is from the same year as mine so if it works on yours then I really don't know what could be the issue.
I also checked for a firmware update but I already have the last available.
    This is really weird.

  14. Is someone with the skill to really differentiate encodes willing to download the files and compare them?
I can give a little more info : I tested a dozen of releases and basically all the HDTV rips that are post easter (more or less precise) do not work on my TV.
The webrips and webdls are all still working fine.
Maybe scene rules has changed or maybe that version of x264 core does something that negates compatibility with certain TVs?

I'll take a look PM me the link(s). It's possible there's a small anomaly in the header somewhere.
Did you attempt to create a new MKV using mkvtoolnix? It just re-wraps the existing assets

  20. as aside note: if you encode for a specific hardware you should set profile, level and vbv restrictions, otherwise the reported level&profile are just guesses which might not really reflect the playback requirements.

  21. I'm wondering if you guys really understood my problem since I may not be clear enough because English is not my native tongue.
I think I explained it better to davexnet in PM (he's been really helpful, thanks again by the way) so here's what I told him :

    "
You're saying "bad file" but the file is not bad. There's nothing wrong with it, it just won't play on my TV integrated player.
And I told you, I noticed the same behavior for all HDTV rips that are post easter (more or less).
All the HDTV rips from before easter work fine.

For example, bla.bla.bla.bla.S12E19.720p.HDTV.x264-LucidTV does not work (it's from 2 days ago).
bla.bla.bla.bla.S12E18.720p.HDTV.x264-LucidTV does not work either (from 17 days ago)
But bla.bla.bla.bla.720p.HDTV.x264-AVS works fine (from 45 days ago)
And I tested that with a lot of releases and it's always the same problem : the latest release are not working but the releases from a month ago and before work fine.

That's why I found this so crazy especially since the files seems to have exactly the same parameters of encode except for the version of x264 core that is used to do the encode.

  23. Holy crap, the file encoded with x264 r2334 works!
So as we suspected, the problem is related to the version of x264 core used to do the encodes.

Selur, I did not get one word in your two posts
Kind of a noob regarding encoding.

  28. I wonder if this is the cause.

    Signal Progressive and Constrained profiles
Progressive High, Constrained High, and Progressive High 10.

Even in Main profile, constraint_set4_flag is now set to 1 if progressive,
and constraint_set5_flag is set to 1 if no B-slices are present.
    Try:
