Hi
My WDTV has finally bit the dust. I'm looking for a replacement, one that i can connect a USB HDD to and acess that hdd across my windows network. The WDTVdid all of this, and I'm searching for a replacement.
I do not wish to stream videos direct from my pc. It is a laptop and not always switched on. Just a straight replacment for the WDTV Live.
Many thanks
El Terry

Look for NAS Boxes with USB ports
Western digital abandoned their WDTV line in favor of their NAS solutions like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC0tgC-0APE&t=1213s -
Hi
I'm no further forward. Nvida shield, Im told, doesnt have DIRECT hdd access, you have to transfer to the internal drive first. As for an NAS Box with USB, I have no idea what youmean. Could you point me to a particualr model, any model, that does what I want it to do. I would be very , very grateful

Hi
These replies are no helpful. Does anybody actually know of a device that will do what the WDTV did? An actual device, not a list of links. Does anybody know of one and use it themsevles? I'm beginning to wonder if such a thing exists.
Thank

Right now... HARDWARE PLAYERS LIKE WDTV LIVE are pretty much out of style... It was an one off product that never got any traction over time..
It was a box that could play only a limited number of media files... Limited memory .. An outdated chipset and a limited storage options 1 TB max on the live HUB + connection two USB 2 ...
Right now people would get a decent MINIPC with an intel processor and Windows 10.. and do pretty much what the WDTV did plus more...

what about the dvdfab movie server - https://www.dvdfab.cn/movie-server.htm?trackID=navmenu2

I believe you have been told something incorrect. I have 2 Shields. One of them I use without network access (I did use network access to set it up initially). I plug a USB drive directly into my Shield and can access the drive directly. I use Kodi as an interface, and it functions almost identically to my old WDTV. Even better, there is no 2 TB limit to the drives that can be attached.

if you put all your movies on a nas box(network attached storage) such as most of what's listed here - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=nas&s=price-asc-rank&qid=1558371026&ref=sr_st_price-asc-rank . then you can use things like networked dvd/blu-ray players, chromecasts, fire tv products, even some networked tvs to play the videos off of the nas. we mostly use a firetv devices with vlc installed to watch with these days.
