Can one use ffdshow as a decoder when watching through a capture card in virtualdub? Not capturing just preview/watching? If so, how does one do that?

  2. Probably not - application must provide "tee filter" or preview functionality - this is low level functionality provided usually or trough capture driver or additional system filter like mentioned "tee".

  3. Do you specifically need to use VirtualDub? If not, you could use GraphEdit or GraphStudio to capture, pipe through ffdshow, then render to the screen.

Yes I would like to use virtualdub, I'm surprised but I can't find any info on this.

  5. You can build a capture graph with GraphEdit or GraphStudio then open that as if it was an AVI file and "play" it with VirtualDub.

I prefer not to use graphedit or graphstudio.

  7. VirtualDub lets you apply filters while capturing (Video -> Filter Chain) and there's an ffdshow filter available for it (ffvdub.vdf). But the preview window always shows the video before filters are applied.

I figured out the problem, I was using virtualdub 64 bit while running ffdshow 32 bit. So I used virtualdub 32 bit with ffdshow and now ffdshow can do the video decoding when in capture avi mode!
