  1. Hello.
I've just bought a LG smart tv and I was trying to see a movie (.mkv) plugging a HDD on tv.
I can see it properly and I can also choose the language, but I can't set any subtitles (the icon is disable).
I've read I should take subtitles out of the mkv file, but I prefer not to change the file, cause it can be I'm watching that also on pc.
Is there a way (like downloading another program for watching movies) for being able of choosing subtitles?
    Thanks.
    Luigi.

You won't be changing the file. You'll still have the embedded subs (which, apparently, your television can't read), but you'll also create an external subtitle file. You'll just be using the MKVExtract portion of MKVToolNix.

Also make sure the subs are in a format your television supports.

I tried an MKV with SRT subs on my LG smart TV played back from a USB thumb drive
and the subs work fine. This is the first time I ever tried this, I always use the local
network to playback from my Windows PC using the windows media server.

Perhaps hit the down arrow for the controls, scroll all the way to the right to the 3 dots (...)
and select that perhaps the subs will be available.
This is how the subs look in mediainfo:

    Text
    ID : 3
    Format : UTF-8
    Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8
    Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain Text
    Duration : 2 h 42 min
    Bit rate : 39 b/s
    Count of elements : 1325
    Stream size : 47.5 KiB (0%)
    Title :
    Language : English
    Default : Yes
    Forced : Yes
